1) Grandma's sewing machine is a treadle-foot. Fantastic. (My personal belief is that when the zombie apocalypse comes, or whatever other complete devolution of civilization as we know it, particularly the power grid, the crafters and food makers and the low-paying/blue-collar workers are going to be as gods. Having a sewing machine that doesn't require electricity seems an important part of that. Plus! A lot of those old ones were strong enough to sew leather!)
2) Now I want a toast server. Especially if it's pretty like that one.
it is indeed! i don't think you can see it but the cable that runs around the wheel and up into the machine is broken, so it doesn't actually work. but if i replaced that, yeah, i could use it to sew. (i don't know how to sew. i can replace a button and that's about it. if the zombie apocalypse comes i'm going to have the tools but not the knowledge.) i don't know what kind of shape the sewing machine itself is in, but it's been inside the table for i don't know how long, so it might be ok.
i don't know if my grandma even ever used the toast server. it's so weird and uselessly formal. but so neat!
(the toaster server and the sewing machine belonged to two different grandmas. both sides of the family in one post. :D )
Is that the infamous basement? :D The sewing machine is so cool and archaic! Do you know how to use one? I grew up with one and probably couldn't use it now, although I suppose it depends on how complicated the particular model is.
that is the infamous basement! that's what's left of the massive wall of boxes that used to be off-screen to the left. (MASSIVE.) minus my comic book boxes, which i took home already, and the two or three boxes of my sister's stuff.
i have no idea how to use a sewing machine. none. if the power grid fails tomorrow and the apocalypse comes and we all have to make our own clothes, mine are going to look really ugly. on the other hand, i don't think this one is that hard to use. i mean, it's not electric, it's not like it has four speeds and seven different pre-programmed stitches.

Also, I'm not a very good sewist either, but it is not hard to learn the basics. (And if all else fails, you can rent out the equipment!)
