last night my twitter feed was mostly grief and anger over the shooting in orlando, giving way to squee over the stanley cup and unbridled fangirl joy over the tonys. and also grief and anger over orlando. it was a little whiplashy but at the same time it was nice to be reminded that the world is not an unremittingly horrible place. and now ( Read more... )

wtf, the tonys, butter, architectural wtf, hockey, bad news, librarians are the best, bridge love, chickens, superheroes, curling

I love Spite houses, I've read about a bunch that are still around today- there's one in Mass that's still standing that's from the 1700s if I remember correctly- there's just something about human nature that results in those kind of actions that always cracks me up.

Bog butter... does not sound good. But I understand the need to try to preserve stuff prerefrigeration days.

i had to google for massachusetts spite houses and there are several! people actually live in the one in boston. and one of them is across the street from where i used to live in cambridge! now it's an interior design firm or something and i always wondered why it was so small - like, who would build a freestanding building (that's clearly not a shed) that tiny? so now i know. i love the idea of them. they're so petty.

apparently bog butter was buried in a container if the bog was supposed to be refrigerate it, so the giant lump in the article might have been buried as an offering to the local gods or as part of a ritual or something. i wouldn't eat it either.

I had to pass onto a friend from work the superhero vs superhero debate. He's strongly on the side of the Caped Crusader. *grins*

but the only thing he really has to recommend him is that he has a lot of nifty toys. well, and the batsuit might be reinforced and bulletproof. but he's still just a normal human inside the suit.

The bog butter sounds like unsanitary bog cheese at this point. Ewwwwwww.

The 5-foot wide spite house! I wish there had been actual pictures!

i'm not sure how something that's been buried in a bog for a couple thousand years can still be edible, but maybe bogs are really preservative.... ew, tho.

there are pictures of the outside of the house, but i don't know if there are any of the interior. i really want to know how they managed with an eighteen-inch-wide dining room.
