caught a rerun of one of my favorite episodes of criminal minds earlier - omnivore, in which a cadaverous c thomas howell makes a very convincing serial killer, and i spend half an hour yelling "BOSTON DOES NOT LOOK LIKE THAT" at the tv. it's a good episode ( Read more... )

ugh weather, doggie love, historical women, food, historical record, music, outer space, rizzoli & isles, criminal minds

Criminal Minds is terrible for setting episodes in places that don't remotely resemble where they are supposed to be set. I've only watched a few episodes but one was set on Long Island and the complete lack of understanding of basic NY geography was astounding.

(They declared it'd be easy to stop bad guy from getting away, they'd just shut the down the roads off the Island.... during rush hour. No mention of the fact Brooklyn and Queens are on Long Island and well, the Island is BIG and there'd be no reason to leave because it'd be super easy to hide out and apparently it's easy to shut down ALL THE BRIDGES between all the NYC boroughs and also NJ and the tunnels too for that matter and, heck, there's also the ferry and not to mention a zillion little boats that are unregulated and and and.... I watched that episode a good 5 years ago and apparently it still annoys me. Sorry)

That quilt is *amazing*. Wowsa.

is the long island episode the one with rossi's old friend and the judge who was paying a hired killer to off people who'd escaped justice? because yeah, you can't block access on and off the island like that. it's like they don't even try! even leverage, which was set in boston, wasn't that blatantly terrible - except for once, when they were supposedly in the north end and there were woods and industrial parks and in reality the north end is very, very urban - and it was pretty clearly NOT filmed here.

in other news, space quilt! it's so cool.

I think that's the episode, it definitely revolved around a friend of Rossi's. There was so much geographic (and logic) fail in that ep. From roads that don't the way they said they went, to calling locations the wrong things (if you're going to a town that's located on Long Island you say you're going to Commack, NY, not Commack, LI also there's no "Long Island Court" but rather Suffolk or Nassau County Courts) to utter fail of it being okay for Rossi to pocket and keep stuff from the case (instead of putting it in evidence) because the people involved were now dead.... I shouted at the TV a lot that day.

Ooh, love the quilt! Plus it seems the quilter used it as a visual aid for teaching astronomy. O.O So awesome.

Is Rizzoli and Isles still on? I used to enjoy it but it seems to have fallen off my radar.

my favorite thing is probably that all the planets have their own moons. and i love that she used it as a teaching aid. astronomy was an acceptable thing for young ladies to study! how cool.

it is still on! i was kind of surprised too.

Nope. It's all filmed here in LA - I was talking to the production designer & asked if they ever traveled, and he said he barely wants to go as far south as Redondo Beach. Same thing with Bones - that's all filmed here too. The Jeffersonian is our Natural History museum...

you'd think with a show that's set all over the country, the cm production designer would at least try to fake whatever city an episode is set in. and i really like cm, but... no.

The first female African American pilot was a beauty! And clearly very persistent in going after what she wanted.

I can't look at the Haviland in those British photos without thinking of the Flavia deLuce novels. The character's mother was a pilot, and the Haviland Moth was her plane.

wasn't she gorgeous? and yeah, imagine having to cross an ocean to find a country that will issue you a pilot's license, because your own country won't.

i never even heard of flavia deluce! de havilands make me think of the de haviland gipsy moth, which makes me think of gipsy danger from pacific rim. (also olivia de haviland.)

I don't tell you this often enough, but I love your posts. So many nifty things!

That quilt! So cool!

Candied sardines taste very, very strange, but not as awful as you'd expect, and I don't like sardines. It's kind of that weird mix of savory and sweet as adding sugar to your tomato sauce. They're still a strange thing to candy, though.

And the BALL DOGS. I was MADE of squee when I saw those! Clever little puppies! (And clever marketing!)

aw, thank you! i blame twitter. :D

i love that all the planets on that quilt have their own moons. and there's a comet trail.

if i was presented with a candy sardine i'd probably try one, because why not, but candied fish is SO WEIRD, just in general. in my head it's kind of salty but not super fishy.

there has to be some actual evidence for the fact that training your shelter dogs to do really cute shit in public (like fetch tennis balls) seriously increases their adoptability. such a smart idea, seriously.
