on the bus home today was an incredibly shrieky small child - like, every minute or so it would come out with this hundred-decibel, eardrum-shattering, high-pitched shriek, the kind of noise that's like a nail through your skull, loud enough and obnoxious enough that people flinched - and i swear i have never wanted to drop-kick a small child out ( Read more... )

Public transport is a universe unto its own. I am a sociable person, generally, but in most situations you know you can walk away if somebody starts to really annoy you. On public transport, you're stuck (unless you chose to abord your mission travels. I've had the luck of wailing babies on both my last flights (I'm assuming it was essential for them to fly, because those little mites just suffer so badly with the cabin pressure thingy), and somewhere around the 2 hour mark my patients starts to run thin. Luckily the flight was only a bit under 3 hours but - what I'm saying, I totally understand you urge to kick the child of the bus.

I loved The Little Prince, that T is just the cutest.

i feel so bad for babies on planes - i mean, i get airsick but i'm an adult and i know what's going on and how to deal with it. (take dramamine. :D ) babies don't. plus, air pressure! and you really can't get off the plane if your kid is disruptively hysterical. so i try to cut babies and their parents some slack. also the last few times i had to fly somewhere, i was really lucky with a lack of cranky children. but on a bus? i was just so annoyed at the mom because she didn't seem to be trying to do anything. and i wasn't about to get off and wait for another bus.

le petit jedi! it's adorable.

Ack. You know, I'm a parent and _I_ hate that kind of noise out of kids. Ours were taught not to make those noises, and a kid that age does not travel on a bus alone. Why wasn't his parent intervening? :(

by which i mean, what if buffy herself was a selfish, self-absorbed capitalist?
That is pretty much exactly how I feel about Ayn Rand, and her followers. Ugh. But that link was priceless. I'm going to forward it to my husband. :D

i have no idea why mom wasn't doing anything. but i wanted to ask what the hell was wrong with her kid and why wasn't she trying to get it to shut the hell up? did she not realize how fucking annoying it is to ride a bus with a very small child who keeps shrieking at the top of its tiny lungs every two minutes?

i'm pretty sure objectivism was just a legitimization of ayn's personal selfishness and self-absorption, like she took a good look at herself and formulated a philosophy that made it not only acceptable but the very best thing for her to be herself. altho i don't think she was that self-aware.

Oh, I'm sure not, because the fact that that approach to life is incredibly selfish and self-serving would have been obvious to her.

'Fuck you, I've got mine" pretty much sums up that whole philosophy. And ignores all the people and programs/processes etcs. that HELPED you get yours. :(
