I think hair is not the main thing being covered with the hijab? Unlike with Jewish ladies who cover their hair? But I am not sure.

i don't know! which is why i asked. i always thought it was to hide the hair, but if there are women who are bald under their hijabs, it's not like you can really tell.

No, I.. realize you didn't know. I think I read something by the artist of those cartoons that it is the neck/head they are covering, not hair per se. Whereas with Jewish women, it's definitely the hair. Which is why Modern Orthodox use funky wigs and falls and stuff like that. Or at least this is what I remember from Yeshiva.

interesting! i always thought muslim women were covering their hair, altho that doesn't explain why hijabs always cover the neck too.... now i want to see her draw herself as nick fury. (nicole fury?) i feel like i've learned something. :D

my very general understanding is that the hijab is about modesty more generally, rather than hair covering in particular, but I am no expert.

if i'd actually thought about my question before i asked it, i might have hit on "modesty!" on my own, but. i know orthodox jewish women cover their hair for modesty - i learned that it was because no one but their husbands were supposed to see their real hair - but they can wear wigs rather than scarves or hats, and they don't necessarily cover their necks.

i am clearly going to have to do some reading on this, because my curiosity is totally piqued, and i don't know any muslim women to ask.

the fireworks were so nice! and then yesterday it rained and was disgusting. and today the sun is out.
