but man, i read that post and it just smacked me upside the head with "this is too depressing and now i can't even comment". and my brain went "hey, look, steve as a chihuahua!" and i pictured him as a yappy little dog biting at a rottweiler's ankles (while the rottweiler goes "...the hell?") and felt better.

Steve as "a chihuahua with aggression issues" is a perfect description. And it explains how Bucky found him in that alley getting beat up when he was supposed to be watching a movie- it was probably just second nature for Buck to ALWAYS check the alleys of anywhere close to where Steve might be just in case Steve had started something that he'd have to finish.
And thank you for sharing that article on pirates! The linguist in me loves the origin of the word 'mate' and it's commentary on classism and how piracy freed people from that was really interesting.

i've seen commentary elseweb (probably on tumblr, because that's where i get all this stuff) that bucky had totally gotten into the habit of checking every alley he walked past, just in case steve was getting his ass kicked in it. i bet he developed a sixth sense for that kind of thing. you know steve was always getting into trouble and bucky was always having to get him out of it.
i read a little about pirates last year for my nanonovel, and i was surprised at how egalitarian and open-minded they could be, at least compared to how the rest of europe seemed to work. so it stands to reason that would carry over into m/m relationships. go pirates. :D
