i met gnomi for lunch today and unloaded some steve/bucky feels on her AGAIN - assorted au feels and some of the various ways the boys' stories might have played out if they hadn't joined the army or they'd both come home from the war or a bunch of other things - kind of prompted by this post of

i'm totally down with the premise, but in steve and bucky's case, yeah, there's kind of a lot of tragedy hiding in the corners. one of the reasons i'm so sold on hipster!steve and punk!bucky is that they can avoid most of it. i mean, no one's going to war, no one's getting experimented on (for good or ill), no one ends up with cybernetic body parts and a brain scrubbed clean of their own history. and the miracles of modern medicine mean that steve is in slightly better physical shape. (altho in my head his mom still dies of something, just not tb.) so they get to have a happy ending.

but man, i read that post and it just smacked me upside the head with "this is too depressing and now i can't even comment". and my brain went "hey, look, steve as a chihuahua!" and i pictured him as a yappy little dog biting at a rottweiler's ankles (while the rottweiler goes "...the hell?") and felt better.

i have a hard time with any au in which bucky manages to off himself, because i don't think steve would let him. my brain just can't go there. so the one where steve joins msf and meets peggy and peggy meets bucky and goes "you. therapy. now. oh, and you should move in with us" totally works for me. because hey, happy ending! (and of course steve produces a kid who makes statement graffiti. and just i bet he has a moral crisis, because how do you discipline your kid for doing something you agree with, and that you would've done at their age, but which isn't socially acceptable/legal/respectful of strangers' property/whatever.) someone needs to write that.

Baby batsock bat is adorable.

Steve as "a chihuahua with aggression issues" is a perfect description. And it explains how Bucky found him in that alley getting beat up when he was supposed to be watching a movie- it was probably just second nature for Buck to ALWAYS check the alleys of anywhere close to where Steve might be just in case Steve had started something that he'd have to finish.

And thank you for sharing that article on pirates! The linguist in me loves the origin of the word 'mate' and it's commentary on classism and how piracy freed people from that was really interesting.

baby bats are always adorable! especially when whoever is taking care of them has a nice pop culture sense of humor. ^"^

i've seen commentary elseweb (probably on tumblr, because that's where i get all this stuff) that bucky had totally gotten into the habit of checking every alley he walked past, just in case steve was getting his ass kicked in it. i bet he developed a sixth sense for that kind of thing. you know steve was always getting into trouble and bucky was always having to get him out of it.

i read a little about pirates last year for my nanonovel, and i was surprised at how egalitarian and open-minded they could be, at least compared to how the rest of europe seemed to work. so it stands to reason that would carry over into m/m relationships. go pirates. :D

That pirate article was interesting - and full of stuff I didn't know about. I was amused by the picture of NPH at the end :)

nph is very versatile. :D and if you try and link pirate relationships to contemporary gay relationships, and you happen to have access to a pic of him dressed as captain hook, well.... why not.

pirates are kind of awesome. i think i knew they were ok with same-sex relationships, but i didn't know they had formalized marriages and everything. they were a very egalitarian bunch.
