yesterday my sister and i went to ikea (she got a lamp and two chairs and some picture frames, and i got, uh, a couple glasses, because i keep breaking mine) and on the way home i mentioned that flowers in the attic was on tv and we spent some quality time trying to remember the titles of all the books and what happened in them, and she made me ( Read more... )

ah nostalgia, ikea, barbie, pirates, fun with my sister, the not-so-secret interior life, fun with friends, bigbang 2014

Ha! I only read Flowers in the Attic a few years ago, and I remember having the hardest time figuring out what the hell I was even reading. It was like horror/romance/gothic/thriller in one wrap. I read it at work, and people asked me what it was, and I couldn't tell them for the life of me. Then the ones who recognized the name gave me Meaningful Looks. What a weird little book it was!

you could've just explained it as "the vc andrews book with the incest", because that's the main thing people remember about it. it's such a strange book, but it made an appearance in so many girls' reading lives.

Well, if you want to be technical, ALL VC Andrews books are "the one with the incest". FitA just happens to be the most famous one.

And yes, they lived in the bedroom with the attic as their playspace.

I didn't watch it, but I do remember reading the books. From what I remember the kids were in the attic, but I got the impression it was a full room made out of the main part of the attic that had been for storage or something and there were stairs off to other bits of it that were unfinished sections? Or something. 10th grade was a long, long time ago.

I'm kind of disappointed they didn't go the overblown gothic soap route to be honest. Oh well.

in the movie the kids were locked in a bedroom with two beds and an attached bath, and behind a door was a narrow stairway that led to the attic. they only had to hide in the attic once a month so the maids could clean the bedroom, otherwise they had the run of both places. it didn't look like a huge attic, either, especially considering the size of the house. and i was so hoping for ott and gothy and soapy! but no. they didn't shy away from the incest, but otherwise, i remember the book being much more ridiculous.

Oh yes, I loved those books from middle school through to freshman year of high school. I wasn't supposed t read them so I had to squirrel them away in my backpack. LOL I actually loved the Heaven series more than the Flowers series, but they were all wonderfully melodramatic and trashy.

i never read the heaven books, but i might've outgrown vc andrews by the time they came out. i read my sweet audrina, tho, which i also remember as being fairly bugnuts.

they were so trashy! but so weirdly compelling.

It's funny, I had remembered My Sweet Audrina as being fascinating and OMG WOW and all, and then I went back and read it in my 20s and thought it was obvious and dumb. LOL
