yesterday i went over to my sister's house so we could order chinese and watch the hobbit #1, and then we hustled our asses out to get a good seat for the hobbit #2. i think i might possibly like #1 better. *ducks* but i liked #2! i really like martin freeman's bilbo and i like all the dwarves and i don't mind the addition of tauriel, ( except! )

movie review, 30 potential days of babble, fun food, new job big office

Haven't seen Hobbit II yet, or, um, ever read the book. But I seem to have strong feelings on the stuff you mention, and in agreement thereof! When Tauriel's existence was first leaked a few years back, you may remember, there was all this outcry against her because what else could she be but a love interest. It kind of offended me, because hello, female characters can do stuff besides whatever it is love interests do. And Tolkien, bless him, did not give us a lot of women to get to know on ME, so why not add one in? I really wanted to get behind Tauriel for basically those reasons, so it's sad to hear it all boils down to a love triangle and not enough action. Ugh. It is SUCH a cliche and lazy writing, as you say. I don't understand why the sf/f side of moviemaking is still stuck on this idea that women don't make popular action heroes, especially with stuff like Hunger Games paying off loud and clear.

(Also, I just really want a Black Widow movie, and I feel we are no closer to it. SIGH)

i didn't have strong feelings about tauriel's invention - i didn't read a whole lot about it because i didn't want to be spoiled for the movie (even tho i read the book! but i knew peter jackson was adding a bunch of stuff and i didn't want to go in with any preconceived ideas) and i was never in lotr fandom, but i wasn't interested in a female character just to have a love story - because you're totally right! it's entirely possible to have female characters and male characters interacting without having them fall in love - women are so much more than that - but i'm not a book purist and the addition of an original female character didn't bother me excessively, altho i did kind of side-eye the whole idea because it kind of smacked of adding a character just to tick off a box, rather than adding someone to make the story richer. (and in all honesty, what they did with her didn't really add anything to the story. they could've cut her entirely and lost nothing.) so imagine my disappointment! i was thinking "look at galadriel!
