yesterday was poisontaster's birthday (she of the interesting writing process posts and the fabulous nail polish pics) and coincidentally the day she gave me a topic for babble! which was about journal making - how, why, and what's my favorite one that i've made ( Read more... )

I've never understood the indoor-umbrella-opening superstition, unless it's fear of taking an eye out in close quarters!

So, it sounds as if none of your superstitions involve Friday the 13th!

I don't really have any, and that date certainly isn't one of them. But I can't resist finding out about what other people think!

i freely admit that the umbrella thing is totally irrational for me, altho i guess it could've started with "you'll poke someone's eye out!" or even "you'll knock something over/off the wall!" but no, i don't have any friday the 13th superstitions.

Oh man, they look friggin' awesome, I'd love to be able to do that. I've made a book of poetry for my mum once (one poem per day of the year), but had it bound by the university service, so it looks like a thesis, durable, practical and dull. Do you need lots of specialist equipment? And how durable is the stiching in the paper, it doesn't look there's any reenforcement, so I'd be worried it wears out easily?

i love that you made your mom a book! even if someone else bound it. you still had to choose all the poems. :D

for coptic stitch binding, all you really need is a good ruler, something to cut the paper and bookboard (or whatever you use for the covers), a little awl or equivalent hole-poking thing, and a curved needle. well, and cover paper and glue and thread. there's specific archival glue for the cover paper, but if you don't care about that kind of thing you can probably use any kind of paper glue. the durability of the binding probably depends on the kind of thread you use - i used dental floss once - but i think they're pretty sturdy. i made a blank journal for a friend of mine to take to india, and it not only survived the trip but apparently even got wet. o.O
