It's possible your thumb drive went bad. They do that eventually (some sooner than others), but they usually have a long lifetime (generally about 10,000 read/write sequences) Of course, whatever is wrong with the USB ports on your laptop could have messed up the boot sector of the flash drive which will cause it to not work on anything else until you reformat it. If it has something on it you want to try and recover (assuming you have a PC type computer--not the laptop, but another one), put it in a USB port, double click on the Computer icon, right click on the drive where the flash drive is (F: for instance), left click Properties on the menu that pops up, click on the Tools tab, click on the Check Now button in the Error Checking area, make sure both check boxes are checked, and click Start. This might be able to fix any boot sector problems/bad sector problems. If it doesn't work, then you will just have to reformat it which will wipe out any data on there. Right click the drive letter at the computer area, left click Format, ( ... )

this is the first time i've ever had a thumb drive long enough for it to die on me. i usually lose them. i like that explanation better than "the usb ports on my laptop are borked", altho the laptop still didn't recognize my ipod and i don't think i've had the thumb drive long enough for that many read/writes, so i'm guessing you're right and the usb port fucked it up. hmph. and i have a mac at home and at work so i can't run that test, which is a bummer. i'm pretty sure i downloaded everything on the thumb drive to my laptop at some point, so i'm not worried about having lost anything irreplaceable. but it's still annoying. but thank you for the help!
