i love ikea even when it's crowded as hell

Aug 15, 2011 22:02

on saturday, myself and my sister hauled my grandma's vanity table and mirror down the stairs and into my dad's suv, and on sunday myself and my cousin hauled it out of the suv and around my parents' house to the basement. (much easier than carrying it inside and trying to get it down the stairs.) so that's out of my front hall and my place is ( Read more... )

moving, leverage, work, ikea, beaten by the technology, book memes, how about eleanor

where did the 100 best fantasy/science fiction books list come from?

It was a reader-selected poll done by NPR. :)

aha! that explains some of the choices. (the reader-selected part, not the npr part. i liked the wheel of time books up to a point, but top-100-books quality fiction they ain't.)

altho i'm still bummed there's no patricia mckillip....

Yeah, it's basically a White Guys Like To Read Books By White Guys list, as popular polls often are.

I'm impressed you made it through seven of the Wheel of Time books! I gave up after 1.5 and I was still waiting for something to happen. ;)

Something Wicked This Way Comes will totally freak you out, because it is gloriously creepy, but it's also my favorite Bradbury ever. It's gorgeous. AND CREEPY. Especially creepy.

i think i read as much wot as i did because a. i was living on long island and commuting into nyc for work, so i had A LOT of subway-riding time to kill, b. there were already six of them in paperback and by the time i finished #6, #7 was out in hardcover, and c. i kept hoping something would happen. i had to wait for #8 to come out in hardcover, so it was a good place to give up.

i bought a collection of joe hill's short stories (i forget the title >.< ) knowing i'd probably be creeped right out, and he was kind of sight unseen, and at least i know i like bradbury. so i figure at least i'll enjoy the book as he's scaring the hell out of me.

I am SO with you on Connie Willis. HIGHLY recommend the Vorkosigan books, though.

i don't know anything about them, other than they're fairly well regarded. i don't even know what the story is!

The Farseer Trilogy is completely worth it (in a rip your heart out way) in spite of Robin Hobb's stance on fanfic. I get the impression she really doesn't understand what a compelling thing she created, but the Fool is possibly my favorite character in anything I've ever read.

for better or worse, i'm completely turned off her books by her stance on fanfic. and i know i know someone else who really liked the farseer books - ephemera, i think - and they sound kind of like books i'd like, and i kind of wish robin hobb hadn't talked smack in public.

i hope you're not surprised....

i just realized there's no james tiptree, jr, either! and she's classic scifi. man, npr readers have no taste. hmph.

Lists and anthologies no longer surprise me, sadly.

Well, okay, seeing the Thrawn Trilogy by Zahn made me do a little doubletake. It was very, very good, but it's also Star Wars pro-fic. Weird list.

oh man. i'm going to go to ikea eventually to furnish my eventual apartment, and it's going to be weird not going with you. also, not-remotely-funny-story: the send-to address fell off at least one of my shipped boxes, which wound up making its way back to my old apartment. so i basically paid $23 to ship my box three blocks down the street. >:(
