On the left in the menu it should say "My Preferences" - click that, go down to statistics, and you can turn the hit counter off. There are three separate things you can check or uncheck.

# Don't show me any hit counts.
# Don't show me hits on my works.
# Don't publicly display hits on my works.

And sadly, the AO3 doesn't have as much of a culture of commenting yet. Even things with lots of hits there can have no comments.

this is where i admit i saw that and actually gave it some thought, and decided no, for now i want to know if people are reading. >.< i will probably change my mind and check ALL THE BOXES.

aaaaaand while i was in the middle of typing this i went and checked "don't show me hits on my works". altho i don't think there's a way to NOT be neurotic about this....
