saw the blind side with my sister last night and while i predicted pretty much everything that happened - there are really no surprises in this movie - i still really liked it. plus it has ( Read more... )

... Japan is very pretty but now I have a headache.

I keep waking up with Alvin (the chipmunk) singing "Don't Cha" in my head, which is wrong on too many levels to even process. You're welcome! :D

it is, and i did too. an actual stereopticon probably wouldn't be as bad. hopefully.

i have no frame of reference for chipmunk songs, so :p still being earwormed by grandma and the reindeer. yeesh.

Okay, those stereopticon things made me totally ill! They're really beautiful, but before I'd looked at a dozen of them I felt weird, and then I had to close the window. I have a terrible headache and I think I might throw up. SO WEIRD. It's very unusual for me to get sick from something like that, even those handheld camera type movies have never given me any trouble. BLEH. (LOL! Don't feel bad, you totally warned me.)

there's a flickr set of tons of (still!) stereopticon pics, so you can check them out without worrying about wanting to puke. there are some really fabulous photos. (i knew someone was going to feel ill. :( i was actually surprised it wasn't me.)

Uhm, sort of semi-random, but you didn't see anything wrong with the 'What this poor black child needs is a white honkey lady'? You just saw sniffly moments where white folk got to feel good about themselves as they 'caretook' a black youth and got pats on backs and the occasional 'But it's a negro!' ?

I ask because you called it predictable, so I was just wondering if it was predictable but somehow managed to avoid all the racism.

oh, no, i totally caught that. there was a lot of "this poor black kid just needs a nice wealthy white family", and aside from leigh ann's one friend asking if she was just doing it out of liberal white guilt, there was absolutely no questioning or even mention of the racist undertones. which i also thought was predictable. i mean, they were definitely there, but the movie was too feel-good to make the point.

(and lest you think i only sniffled at the white folks getting to feel good about themselves, i got a significant amount of teary over michael realizing his own potential. i mean, he wasn't a dumb useless kid, he just had to figure out what he was capable of.)

and man, the contrast between michael's life and the touhys' life was INSANE. i was in fact a little uncomfortable with how much privilege they had and took for granted.

So it was predictable, including the racism and thus was so predictable you didn't need to bring up your own discomfort until asked because 'everyone' would know what you meant by ' predictable'

Re: Your sniffling

Getting teary eyed that once a white family got involved, the child in need got a chance to figure out his own potential - does that include getting teary eyed about all the kids who don't have a white family come charging to play savior? Who get discounted and continue to be discounted and grow up and are still discounted?

Did you -mean- to come across as saying 'My liberal heart hurt for the poor black child. I wasn't just all awwhing at the white family's noblesse oblige. My awwh is equal opportunity/colour blind'

what was predictable was that the movie totally ignored the racism and liberal white noblesse oblige. which i didn't mention in my capsule review because it was, you know, a capsule review. i didn't feel like giving a detailed in-depth review, but if i had i would've mentioned the things i didn't like and the things that made me cringe.

if you want to call me out as a racist, then do so.
