All I can comment on is Harry Potter - there are never any witches or wizards specifically mentioned as Jewish. Or for that matter, Christian, Muslim, Hindi, what have you. Religion is never mentioned, even though Christmas is celebrated, ie. gifts are exchanged. (It is more along the lines of Father Christmas than baby Jesus.) But there are black, South Asian (Indian), Asian and Irish students so I am guessing that there are Jewish kids too; Hogwarts seems to be representative of the ethnic diversity of the UK.

that makes sense. from what i remember, there's not a whole lot of religion in hp, so the existence of a jewish wizard/wizarding student who identifies enough to wear a star of david kind of threw me. and then i figured he was an oc and it didn't really matter.

Oh, that's the email I never answered! Among others. *shameface*

I recall z-e-r-o canon information about Gideon's religion, other than he is familiar enough with both the Bible and the Quran to quote passages, but that is presented more as something-he-knows rather than something-he-believes. I agree the presentation in that fic is a little... odd, because on the one hand if you are likely to follow one practice of a religion more than any other, rituals around death are a good candidate, but on the other hand you said Emily goes farther with it than is typical even among practicing Jews. So... huh.

I'm not involved enough in the fandom to know if there's fanon. *hands*

aside from the fact that she's way too immediate and weirdly specific in her display of grief, you don't rend your garments/wear a ribbon with a slash in it for people who aren't related to you. you only do it for immediate family, like your parents/kids/siblings. i didn't do it for my uncle. so for prentiss to cut hotch's tie is misinterpreting the text. i don't care if he is the mom of the bau, it's not a blood relationship, and if she knows enough to say the right prayer and perform the right ritual, she'd know that too.

i wouldn't have thought gideon was particularly observant of one specific faith over another, anyway. i mean, maybe he is jewish, but is he really that observant? y'know?
