To answer the 2nd part first, no, most houses in L.A. do not have basements. Or attics, for that matter.

Um, as far as the ranch-style house that would have a pool that wouldn't be the Most Expensive House Ever, although, if he inherited the house, it could be in a really nice neighborhood...

Okay, anyway, I'd say either someplace like North Hollywood or Studio City or, and this would be a really cool place to have it, but most of the houses were build in the 20s and 30s, in Los Feliz. But if it's ranch style you really want, I'd stick with the lower valley - NoHo, Studio City, Toluca Lake, parts of Burbank.

in my head it's a ranch because that's what i'm used to and what i can picture most easily, but it doesn't have to be. the location and neighborhood are more important than the style of house. someplace you could have a bunch of arty slacker types hanging out in your house and a drained pool in the backyard and the neighbors won't run you out of the area. (and i'd prefer a house from the 20s, myself.... ranch houses are boring.) what's los feliz like?

i feel like i should be googling la neighborhoods now to get an idea what all these places look like. if my sister still lived there i could go visit and make her drive me around.

Oh, dude, Los Feliz is SUCH a cool place. Lots of artists & actors live there, plus there's a great bookstore called Skylight and THE best Italian joint & it's up in the hills, so the view of the basin is excellent...

If you really need pics, I can be your Huckleberry. *g*

hmm Glendale and Burbank spring to mind....in addition to what *points upwards* person above me said....

The issue is that -pool- and ranch style screams suburb...which tends to be more conservative in terms of stuff...and further out of LA proper....all of the North San Fernando Valley areas are sort of like that.

Pasadena or Alhambra might also not be a bad locale for this sort of thing...some of the northern parts are more ranch houses.

what if it wasn't a ranch? my parents always had ranch houses so that's what i'm used to and can visualize the easiest, but i'm mostly interested in a middle class(ish) neighborhood where you can have a small pool in the backyard and a bunch of people hanging around your house and coming and going, without the neighbors getting pissy and, i dunno, calling the cops. maybe less emphasis on middle class and more emphasis on permissive and arty, but not super expensive.

maybe i should just set the story in a place i actually know....
