'Making It Literal' Status Report// Chapter Two \\
“Hah? So chibi-kun has a brother?” Suzuki Sonoko said as she peered at the chibified KID and wondered what she would call him (since Conan was already called ‘chibi’).
PON!
“Oi, you can’t just go out giving flowers to everyone you meet!” Conan protested dryly and John looked at him with a mischievous grin.
“Hm? Can’t I?” John asked with a rhetorical tone and, with a snap of his fingers, every girl in the bus had a flower appear right in front of her.
Conan huffed and didn’t bother to comment.

“Nii-chan!” John sang as he jumped onto Conan’s back (“Oof!”) and clung to him by his neck. Miraculously, Conan didn’t fall flat on his face. “We should go buy ice cream!”
Ran and Sonoko had gone lingerie shopping and, of course, neither boy- and by that I mean Conan- wanted to go (because Kaito spent so much time disguising himself, he was one of the few males that could tolerate shopping). Now, the two shrunken teens were wandering around the mall quite aimlessly.
“Kuroba,” he hissed quietly. Never mind that if someone heard, they were dead, he was suffocating here! “Get off! I can’t breathe!”
John pouted childishly and let go, only to cling to his ‘brother’s arm. “Pleeaase? Ice cream!”
Conan wiggled his arm to try and get it out of the shrunken thief’s grip. He failed. “John!”
“Maria! Let my daughter go!”
The two not-children stopped their banter at the panicked voice and rushed toward where people and police officers were beginning to crowd.
“Kaa-chan!” Conan and John crawled through the crowd and managed to get up front without much incident (by that, I mean they weren’t stepped on), but what they saw made them furious.
There were two men. One held a little blond girl with glasses while the other was by the counter. Both had guns. The clerk behind the counter was stuffing money into a bag while looking nervously from time to time at the gun pointed at him.
“Conan-kun!” The girl cried as she caught sight of them. The cry was ignored by the men while John watched with confusion as Conan inhaled sharply, recognition in his eyes. That girl was his classmate, Higashio Maria (1).
Both teens-turned-children surveyed the scene carefully to look for an opening. John spotted one and hurriedly pulled Conan behind some of the crowd and to the side of the store. The older boy’s protests died in his throat as he saw where John was taking him. The spot allowed them to be closer to the scene but hidden from the two men. When they got there, John asked, “What do we do?”
The words have barely left his mouth when Conan determinedly flipped open the target on his watch and shot a dart at the man holding Maria. The dart hit the man’s neck and he fell victim to Hypnos’ spell (2). Maria shot out of the man’s grip and immediately ran to her mother, but as she did-
“Whoa!” Conan yelped as his feet suddenly left the ground and he felt the cold metal of a gun come in contact with his throat. The other man had finished getting his money!
“Ku-Conan!” John shouted with dread but was kicked away by the older Edogawa’s captor.
“You think you’re a hero, don’t you, little boy?” He sneered at Conan disdainfully. “This,” he cocked the gun, “is what happens to hero-wannabes.”
“Oi!”
The man’s attention was diverted, at first to John, then to a pill-like object that was sailing towards him. The man started to laugh only for it to turn to coughs as the object exploded into smoke. The man slumped to the ground, asleep, while Conan ran to John and the police managing the crowd went to arrest the two men.
“So, how did you know not to breathe the gas in?” John asked his ‘twin’ with amusement when he reached him.
“Pfft, as if I’m gonna trust anything that you would throw,” Conan said dryly, but fell to the floor when a force suddenly impacted against him. “Oof!”
“Conan-kun! Thank you!”
It was Maria, and she was teary-eyed. Behind her was her mother, the similarity was almost uncanny. “Thank you for saving my daughter. If there’s anything I can help you with, please let me know,” she said, Kansai accent and all, as she pulled her daughter off of him.
Conan smiled embarrassedly at the two and nodded as he stood up and John grinned. The two girls waved gratefully as they left and Conan waved as well while John elbowed him teasingly. “So, how many girls are competing for your love now?” He asked and Conan half-heartedly glared at him.
“Conan-kun!”
“Huh?” Conan and John faced the source of the yell and found Takagi Wataru walking toward them. “Takagi-keiji!”
“Are you two o- wait... two?” The almost-naïvely-innocent police officer wondered as he looked between the two who traded looks and grinned at the older man’s confusion.
“I’m Conan’s twin, Edogawa John!” He bowed and said, “Nice to meet you!”
“It’s nice to meet you too, John-kun,” Wataru said and bowed back as Conan wondered why John didn’t seem bothered at being called ‘-kun’ instead of ‘-san’. He figured that it was either because he liked the casualty or he was bothered but was just hiding it. As Conan thought all this, Wataru asked in kind concern, “Are you two okay?”
They nodded and said in unison, “We’re okay.” This caused them to look at each other with half-hearted glares and amusement in their eyes.
“So, um... what did you two do to them?” Wataru asked, jerking his thumb to where the two criminals once where.
“Sleeping dart,” Conan answered truthfully, just as John answered, “Sleeping gas.”
Wataru blinked confusedly, “Where do you get those things?”
“Agasa-hakase,” Conan replied while John merely grinned.
“Oh, right...” Wataru mumbled as someone called out.
“Conan-kun! John-kun! Are you okay?”
It was Ran, with Sonoko trailing behind her.
- - - - -
“I’m Edogawa John and I’ll be going to this school starting today. It’s nice to meet you!”
“Edogawa John?”
“Are you Conan-kun’s brother?”
“Yup!”
“John-kun, why don’t you sit beside your brother?”
“Hai!”
ScrEEk, thump...
“Oi, what’s got you in such cheer today?”
John raised an eyebrow at his brother and grinned cheerfully, “If you’ve got bad luck, you should never let anyone know, because they’ll take advantage of it!”
Conan snorted. “Poker face, and how do you really feel?”
“This just sucks!” John whispered conspiratorially, the happy grin still stuck on his face, which, Conan mused, was slightly disturbing. “I’m finally nearing graduation (3) only to have to start over again from the very beginning!”
“I know exactly how you feel,” Conan sighed. Yes, he knew exactly how he felt...

The pale-skinned teen slung his duffel bag on his shoulder as an elderly woman did the same beside him. “Well,” the woman’s voice was surprisingly strong, “I don’t understand why you wish to come back to Japan, but since we’re here, we should greet your father.”
“Sure, baaya (4),” the teen shot her an exasperated look as they began to walk to the exit of the busy airport.
“Don’t take that tone with me, Saguru,” the woman said sharply, “You seem to be forgetting who raised you!”
Hakuba Saguru turned his blue eyes to the ground at the reminder. Yes, the old woman was the one who raised him in his parents’ absence, and he was grateful that she did. What he was annoyed at was that his baaya couldn’t seem to identify fond exasperation well. His lips pulled into a smirk at the thought and he looked away from his baaya so she couldn’t see it and mistake it for mockery.
“As soon as we get settled, you’re going to get your hair cut,” he heard the woman say in her strict, no-nonsense voice. He couldn’t understand why she’d want to have his dark blonde hair (he liked to think of his hair as tea-colored) cut so soon though. It wasn’t even that long yet! Saguru opened his mouth to protest, but was cut off, “You’ll go to that investigation of yours after your hair cut.”
Saguru clamped his mouth shut and sulked all the way home.

“Ne, let’s go to the park,” Ayumi suggested as they stopped by the lockers to change their shoes, her blue eyes nice and big and round and so hopeful, that Genta and Mitsuhiko immediately melted and agreed. Even Ai, the ever stoic scientist, faced with those pleading eyes, did not last more than a few seconds. John, given his restless nature, was agreeable to being outdoors, so he also voted to going. Faced with an unanimous vote, Conan could do nothing but follow. After all, he did have to make sure that the shrunken Kaito didn’t create too much chaos in the park.
“Did you see yesterday’s episode of Kamen Yaiba?”
“Yeah, it was super-awesome!”
“It’s my favorite episode!”
“Genta-kun, every episode is your favorite episode!”
The trio of real children burst into happy giggles as they walked ahead of the three faux-children, one of which was rolling his eyes, another of which had a small smile on her face, and the last of which seemed oblivious, preferring to pay attention to the four balls he was juggling. The walk to the park continued in this matter until, suddenly, one ball failed to be caught and went bouncing away, all but unnoticed by the owner, who had stopped juggling and was now staring off somewhere with a shocked expression on his face.
“John?” Conan called as he backtracked and approached his ‘twin’, “You okay?”
When he received no response, the miniature detective followed his gaze to a young woman. Her wild brown hair reached just below her shoulders and her sad eyes were a dark blue. She wore a uniform of navy blue and white with a red ribbon tucked and tied under her blouse’s collar. Clutched in her hands were papers- fliers, Conan realized as she handed them out to several people in the park. He wondered what she was to his ‘brother’. Suddenly, the younger ‘twin’ uttered, “Aoko.”
And Conan realized, this girl was Kaito’s ‘Ran’.

“Tadaima...” She whispered to the empty house as she closed the front door behind her. Of course, she’d been living alone for the past ten years, did she expect someone to be inside her home? Maybe to kill her?
She smiled sadly, But it’s true, isn’t it? They want me dead.
Shaking her head, she entered a room with a computer which she plugged in and started up. When the desktop appeared, she took out a CD from the backpack she carried and inserted it into the computer. Many files showed up, all of them copied from the main database.
She clicked on one and scrolled down until she found what she was looking for.

“He’s been missing for six days now. All because he went to that stupid KID heist,” Aoko added bitterly, “I told him not to go.”
“I asked,” Ai said, “but she only got a surprised look on her face and said: Oh, you didn’t know? Oops...”
And true to his hot-blooded nature, Heiji rattled on, “What if I was part of the or-” And he froze, and shut up.
