Part 9
Takaki halts in his steps, hands on his knees, panting heavily.
“Damn, who knew the little guy was such a fast runner!”
Yabu clicks his toungue impatiently and stares at his phone as Daiki refuses to pick up.
“What happened? Why the hell did he just take off like that?” Takaki muses with a frown. Yabu shrugs helplessly.
“Let’s inform Yokoyama-san, it’s the only thing we can do right now.”

Daiki digs his hands deeper into his jacket, eyes upon the large Iron Gate. His eyes water and his heart is suddenly filled with nostalgia at the sight of his old school, all the memories that he had tried to erase from his mind now rushing back to him.
Yuto…Yuri…Ryosuke…
“Are…can I help you?”
Daiki smiles at the elderly man now exiting the gate.
“Tomoya-san?”
The man looks stunned for a bit.
“Why did you come?” he gasps.
Daiki frowns.
“It’s enough that I already live each day with the guilt of one mistake…I can’t live with another!” he breathes, his wrinkles deepening as his face contorts in fear. He shakes Daiki by the shoulders.
“You’ll get nothing here, go back!”
Daiki pushes him away with a scowl.
“I can’t!” he retorts, his raised tone making the gardener flinch.
“There’s something I need to know,” he says softly, sadly.
“Don’t do this! You’ll end up like him!”
Daiki stares at the gardener in disbelief as it hits him.
“End up like…?”
“I swear all I thought the man wanted to do was talk at the most threaten, he blackmailed me by using my family…I never thought…,”
Daiki felt anger erupt within him as he stares at the man.
“Don’t go!” the gardener shrieks as Daiki pushes past him roughly and enters the gate.
He hastens his steps, unheeding the shouts from the older man and unaware of the eyes that were monitoring his movements from above.
As soon as he reaches the final flight of steps, he stops. Taking a deep breath in an effort to calm his erratic heart-beat he pulls out his phone and dials a certain number before slipping the phone back into his pocket.
Yabu stares at the phone as it rings.
“It’s Daiki,” he gasps. Yokoyama keeps one hand on the steering wheel, the other works on informing the department to begin tracing the call through text.
“But he’s not saying anything,”
Yokoyama frowns.
“Put it on loud speaker,”

Daiki pushes the door open with trembling hands. He feels his knees wobble as he comes to stand before a figure in gray sitting against the recently built fence, smoking.
“Hey, long time no see,” Sawaguchi croaks, his voice low and hoarse.
Daiki frowns. He still can’t believe he’s finally here, in front of this…murderer.
“Tell me what I need to know,” he says, trying his best to keep his voice steady
Sawaguchi looks at him and chuckles.
“Give me your phone,”
Daiki begins to panic.
“Well, hurry up…not that I don’t trust you…but I don’t want anybody eavesdropping on our conversation,”
Daiki clenches his fists. He slips his hand into his pocket and ends the call before placing it on the ground.
Sawaguchi smiles.
“Here,”
Daiki fumbles to catch the black phone thrown to him and his eyes widen.
“You were here weren’t you?” he begins cautiously staring at his friend’s phone and trying to ignore the feeling of dread creeping into him.
He flips it open and frowns at the low battery symbol. He furtively glances at Sawaguchi who is busy staring at the ground and enjoying his cigarette and presses the record button, praying inwardly that enough information could be captured in this phone before it dies completely.
“You mean the night when your beloved friend committed suicide?”
The sentence strikes him like a knife. Sawaguchi sniggers.
“Man, this is like a day’s stroll in the park for me, eliminating people I don’t like…it’s a simple task really…it all started with Toshio, that was what helped me over the edge…living like a daredevil, challenging the stupid police force…that Toshio, always thought he was better than me…it felt so great to finally be rid of him…I do miss him once in a while…we were great friend back from our school days…just like you and that crybaby friend of yours…hmm…though I have to admit…it was pretty brave the way he stood up to me even after I slit his wrist, you know…you would have been dead the same night if he had answered your call,”
Sawaguchi looks up at the younger man as he gets no response and shakes his head at the shock on his face.
“I guess it was too much to absorb eh?”
“He was…anemic…,”
Sawaguchi shrugs.
“Why? Just because you ended up in jail because of us?” Daiki shrieks, tears running down his cheeks. It takes him all of his strength to not beat up the man before him, knowing that he most probably would not be able to win.
“Why in the world do you guys get so emotional huh? I was just trying to leave an impression of why people shouldn’t mess with me, I mean…after that boy fell, I thought that somehow the police would end up looking for me somehow…but it was as if no one cared…they bought the ‘teen jumping off due to stress’ deal so easily it actually made me pity the boy,”
Daiki swears he hadn’t even thought of it yet he finds his body moving on its own accord just as his fingers wrap around the man’s collar and heaves him onto his feet, slamming him against the fence. The phone clatters upon the ground.
“I’ll kill you,” he snarls through gritted teeth. Sawaguchi looks at him blankly before smirking.
“I’d love to see you try,”
Daiki’s eyes widen as he feels a sharp pain shoot through him like a jolt of lightning. He staggers backwards, staring at the blade implanted within his abdomen.
“It’s the same knife I used on your pal, say hello to him for me,”
Daiki clutches himself, the pain unbearable. He tries to fight against the stupor, feeling his consciousness slipping away by the second.
“This is taking too long,” the older man snaps staring at his watch as Daiki falls onto his knees. He then takes out a gun and points it at the boy’s head.
“Nice knowing ya kid,”
Daiki swoons just as the door behind him swings open and the last thing he hears is the sound of a gunshot before everything fades into complete darkness.

It was peaceful and silent and white and he felt as if he were resting on a bed of clouds.
His surroundings were bright as if illuminated by a dozen suns. He feels strangely at home, safe and sound.
“Am I dead?” he croaks to himself.
“That would do nobody any good now would it,”
Daiki’s eyes focus on the figure sitting by his bedside on a strange looking chair and he wonders on how much he had missed his presence.
“I would like to think that I’m dreaming now,”
The boy on the chair smiles brightly, his being seemed to glow with a beautiful luminance.
“I’m sorry…for everything,” Daiki sighs, staring at the ceiling.
“Don’t blame yourself for everything that’s happened Dai-chan,”
“But it was my fault Ryosuke,”
“No it was not, how can you take the blame for that man’s actions?”
“I should have never interfered,”
“He saw us watching as he killed his partner, and that man was a psychopath anyway he would’ve tracked us down either way,”
“But still…I took your picture,”
“Shut up…that’s ridiculous, I don’t want to hear anything anymore,”
Daiki falls quiet immediately. The silence is there but it’s not unnerving, rather comforting.
“Ne, Daichan…I always wondered…why did you choose your current profession anyway?”
“You sound like my boss,”
The boy laughs.
“I do?”
“Yeah…well to tell you the truth…it was after…,”
He feels a pain in his chest and his mouth falls shut as he remembers that night. The ambulance…the crowd… the blood on the ground…him leaning against the tree as his best friend was taken on a stretcher and an hour later, the hospital announcing that he had expired.
“I don’t really know…I felt like I could somehow make a difference I guess…be of more use somehow,”
The other boy hums quietly.
“You should sleep, you must be tired,”
“I don’t want to,”
Ryosuke raises an eyebrow in question. His eyes widen as he spots the tears that leave the older boy’s eyes, trailing down his cheeks and onto the pillow.
“Cause I know you won’t be there when I wake up,” he croaks. Ryosuke’s gaze softens.
“Sleep Daiki,” he says softly.
“No,” the older retorts. His eyelids were getting heavier by the minute.
Ryosuke sighs as the older boy finally dozes off.
“I’m sorry Daichan, I’m really sorry.”
