Chapter Seven

“They're recruiting young men for the military, looks like the tensions within the government weren’t enough, now that we are threatened from outsiders, the shogunate will need as much manpower as they can get their hands on.”

“Anata, you’re not suggestion, Ryosuke?”

“He’s my only son, and I know he can make me proud,”

“But he’s not a fighter,”

“I know, but he needs to change, he needs to become stronger, in every possible way,”

“I don’t want to lose him,”

Ryosuke pulls his knees closer as he listens to the conversation in the next room.

“My son is the most precious thing to me, but keeping him under my protection in this cruel world would be nothing short of injustice, he has to go.”

“Ryo…suke?”

Ryosuke opened his eyes as he felt a whisper breeze through his ears. Was it the wind, or his mind playing tricks? He felt warmth on his left and turned slightly to see Yuto sleeping peacefully, head on his shoulder. He shifted slightly, and very carefully laid Yuto against the tree they had been resting against. Getting to his feet he stretched, looking down from the promontory he stood upon to a foaming river flowing beneath, and the silhouette of a great city on the horizon.

The sky was cloudy, and the leaves rustled in the chilly breeze. He shivered, holding himself and rubbing his palms over his bare arms in order to warm them up.

“Ryosuke?”

He turned around quickly. This time he was sure he had heard it, the voice of a woman, as faint as the breeze.

He heard tinkering sounds and the sound of faint laughter.

“Over here,”

Placing a hand over the trunk of the massive tree he pushed himself into the glade beyond and froze.

From among the rustling leaves, golden bright light fell gracefully upon the blossoms laden ground and standing upon them, barefooted, was a woman.

“Anata wa dare?”

“Riku dess, watashi wa Riku dess,” she replied softly. The wind played with her long black braid as she turned around gracefully, her pale blue dress swishing as she did so. A small smile crept upon her cherry pink lips and he flinched as she focused her slit-like golden pupils upon him.

“Riku?”

“Hai,” she replied bowing slightly. He gaped at the voluminous clothes, the pale blue rimmed with white lace, the elegant bell sleeves that were not attached to the dress and the long thread necklace with shells that hung around her neck, her anklet jingling as she walked closer towards him.

“Ryosuke?”

“Y-yes?” he stuttered moving backwards till his back hit the tree as she continued advancing, stopping inches from him. She reached out a cold hand and pushed his bangs over his forehead. She smelled strongly of cherry blossoms.

“Very beautiful,” she replied in mild wonderment. Ryosuke stood rooted to the spot.

She smiled.

“Sorry for being so rude,”

He shook his head dumbly.

“Nani?” he asked, voice barely a whisper as she continued staring, very aware of the faint blush around his cheeks.

“You’re very special you know,” she replied simply and ruffled his hair before backing off, leaving Ryosuke in the same position, dumbfounded.

Turning her back on him she started walking away.

“Chotto matte!” he exclaimed as soon as his senses restarted.

“Nani?” she asked without turning around.

“Who are you exactly?” he pressed.

There was a brief moment of silence before she started walking again, replying in a melancholic voice as she did so.

“A sacrifice.”
