Chapter Twenty- Nine

I remember everybody had been thinking about the great battle with a mixture of different feelings. These emotions wafted in the atmosphere that we shared. There was excitement, because it was what we had been training for nearly two years and at the end we had homes to return to, families waiting for us; anxiety, because it was our ultimate examination, the final test and a hidden fear, because our failure would have meant the end of it all.

It’s easy for me to sit back and write this down casually now since I’ve already gone through it all. But as I ponder back to those days, I realized that indeed I was immature. For every day, we were fighting a battle, in one way or another.

All were having an internal struggle, troubling memories and unexplainable fears. The unexpectedness of the future, the heightening expectations…people were counting on us after all, whether they knew it or not.

That’s why we were warriors, not because we were the chosen ones, but because we were dealing with things far more dangerous than any demon alive. We had to deal with ourselves.

Kamiki had almost forgotten that he was supposed to be breathing as he, with Shida and Jun at his side watched their new found friend stand facing another, weapon in hand.

Yamada was constantly staring at the sword he had been given as he tried to get used to its rough texture against his skin. He frowned. He had known from the very beginning that no matter how hard he fought he would never win this battle. He stretched the fingers of his second hand and looked at his now bare palm and the symbol etched into the skin.

What would happen at the end of this confrontation was not what mattered. Because of him, the trio standing behind were in danger, had to face hardship being kidnapped and brought far from their home.

All because these people had wanted him, they had to suffer along.

He was not the most noble of people, having run away when he had the chance to be a part of his friends’ battle, but he was human enough to know…this was not right.

His friends would be able to escape, if he fought that is. They were never meant to be here in the first place so this would be the only right thing to do.

He chuckled darkly. No matter what way he looked at it, no matter how many times he tried to escape the fact, it always came smacking him in the face.

He was a sacrifice, but not because he had to be, but because he could.

He looked up to face the patiently waiting Akira, a new determination in his eyes.

“Shall we start?” the older asked twirling his blade in one hand. Ryosuke nodded.

Maya winced in pain as she was slammed against the hard wall and slid onto the floor. She felt blood trickle down the side of her head and blinked up in fear.

Since when had this girl become so strong?
She watched helplessly, her body refusing to respond as Siren sauntered towards her, a magnificent spear with carvings on its body grasped tightly in both hands. The wind from the arched windows played with her hair as her eyes glinted with moisture in the bloody sunlight and her pale lips wore a slight smirk.

She spun the weapon swiftly so that the sharp edge of the spear came to be a few inches from Maya’s throat.

“Go ahead, kill me,” she snarled but flinched as the blade sparked. Siren shook her head.

“Muri dess onechan, I find no profit in doing that, I just wanted to make it clear to you that just because
you’re my predecessor doesn't mean you can bully me,”

Maya was shocked at the mocking tone of her voice. The girl had never even looked up at her before.

But Siren immediately clutched the side of her head and backed off, her weapon falling heavily on to the floor. The headache was back and it was as severe as ever.

A figure tumbling off the edge of a cliff…a prison cell…indescribable pain…

“My Lord!” Maya exclaimed as she saw Nagaryuu enter the room. He looked furious.

He held up his hand and black smoke rose from the floor, like a massive shadow, engulfing Siren’s form completely.

“This is going to be far more painful than the first time princess. I made a mistake the first time in letting you keep your emotions while just erasing your memory. But this time, I’ll go all the way through.”

Maya watched in fear as the girl started screaming.

Ryosuke gasped as he felt the coarse wall behind him, the impact making his head spin. He was seeing stars.

“Ryo!” Kamiki exclaimed. Jun was struggling to hold him and Shida down.

Akira sighed as he walked towards the panting boy. Yamada had lost his sword a long time ago.

“You fight good,” he commented nonchalantly moving closer.

The emerald blade glinted maliciously in the light of the flickering torches. Yamada groped about for anything
to fight back but frowned as the only thing he found once again was the fan folded up within his kimono.

He remembered Riku’s words.

The sword is not your weapon…

“Guys get out of here please,” he urged as he withdrew the fan quickly. Jun tugged on an unmoving Kamiki.

“We can’t help him,” he reasoned, dealing with his own internal struggle. Shida bit her lip.

Yamada pushed himself off the wall and unfurled the fan just as Akira thrust the blade towards him, making the
weapon stop inches from his face, embedded through its thick fabric.

Akira raised an eyebrow, amused.

Quickly Ryosuke turned the fan upon his fingers forcefully, releasing the blade from Akira’s grasp. Shida’s jaw dropped as the blade clattered onto the floor.

“Nice one, first time I’ve seen that,” Akira drawled, his lips curving up into a charming smirk that sent chills down the younger boy’s spine.

Ryosuke shuffled backwards quickly, trying to not be intimidated by the sudden alteration of Akira’s eye colour...from a glinting black to a bloody red.

He twirled his fan once imitating a step in the dance Riku had thought him and thrust the fan forwards. Like a wave of black, bats from the vicinity gathered together and swarmed over Yamada and onto Akira, making him tumble backwards and onto the floor.

“Who are you?” Kamiki gasped getting back onto his feet as Yamada straightened up. Akira looked up at him, sprawled on the floor, leaning on his elbows and smiled. The cuts on his face disappeared.

“Nice try,” he replied and held up a hand before slowly bringing his fingers together as if he was compressing something in the air. Ryosuke dropped his fan and clutched his throat, feeling an invisible force applying increasing pressure around his neck.

“Ryosuke!” Jun exclaimed this time moving forwards but the boy held up a hand.

“This…is my…fight,” he gasped.

“Stop it please,” Shida pleaded as Akira continued increasing the pressure. Ryosuke’s eyes were rolling back.

“Ryosuke!”

Akira sat up immediately as the voice that called out for that name was different this time. He watched with amazement as Shintaro rushed towards him, his mother at the door, hands on her mouth in shock.

“Akira-ni, please let him go,” Shintaro pleaded, clutching onto his arm, eyes teary. Akira stared at Shintaro for a while.

Damn this frail heart. He released the struggling boy.

Shintaro rushed towards Ryosuke, along with the trio, as he collapsed onto the floor.

“Shin…taro?” Ryosuke gasped breathing deeply. Shintaro nodded smiling.

“You two know each other?” Akira asked casually getting to his feet and dusting his clothes.

“Yes, we met a few years ago when my mother and I were visiting a relative in his hometown, we became good friends even though we only knew each other for a short while,” Shintaro said fondly, wiping the sweat off Yamada’s forehead with his handkerchief.

“Shintaro, leave with them,” Akira said suddenly. All eyes were on him.

Akira looked back at them.

“I’m serious…you,” he pointed at Yamada.

“Take him and get out of here, I will face you in the real battle,” he said before walking away with a shrug.

Kamiki and Jun helped Yamada onto his feet as together with Shintaro and his mother they took off, Shida in the lead.

However as soon as they reached the second landing, they came across some human guards patrolling the vicinity.

“I’ll distract them, you guys go ahead, I’ll be right behind you,” Yamada suggested.

“But how will you remember the way?” Shida asked severely.

“Next is the door with a brass knocker then I have to go down the hall, through the second door on the left and into the great hall with the double doors leading out,” Yamada answered fluently.

Shida let out a shocked ‘ehhh?’ as the other boys dragged her away. Yamada dashed into the center of the hallway and whistled. The guards turned around, spotting him. He saw the group sneak into another corridor from behind them. Turning around he took off, the guards at his heels.

He ran quickly, swiftly and was soon way ahead of them. He reached a very tall door at the end of one corridor and decided that he should hide and wait for them to spread into other parts of the labyrinth before making his escape. He reached for the handle but was surprised as the door opened by itself.

Kaze?

Peeking inside he saw that it was an empty dark room with a single object in the middle.

A large sphere with golden fumes stood in the center of the circular chamber and there was nothing else. Hearing footsteps he quickly slipped inside and snapped the door shut behind him.

Note: These confrontations took longer than i thought. My school has started so i won't be updating very often but I'll do my best to update at least one chapter daily.
Also, I would appreciate feedback on some of my original characters, including Asuka and Tsubasa.
I observed that Yamada has good memory power...but he's an actor...memorizing is his job...but still...
Thanx for following the story so far and preview of next chapter...was it wise for him to step into that room?? What could be the consequences? And will Akira's move be seen as treachery?
lame i know...i just like the whole preview concept in dramas :P
