Chapter Fourteen
I’ve read countless books touching on significant historical subjects, but never have I come across a tale such as this.
Taiyou-kun told us that Yasutsuna and Nagaryuu were comrades with an unbreakable bond. They had differences in rank, education and status of living, yet they lived like brothers…inseparable.
Yasutsuna was the peace loving son of a farmer who was forced into the battlefield at age 18 when invaders attacked the unsuspecting Japanese forces.
There he met the legendary scholar turned fighter, Nagaryuu, who had risen among the ranks quickly and held the rank of General at a young age of 25.
However with the mass opposing forces refusing to abate and the dwindling numbers of the Japanese army, Nagaryuu and Yasutsuna came across each other as the only ones left to defend a fortress vital for the survival of the government. That battle put them together as a team and they continued fighting as well as finding, recruiting and training more men together, rank forgotten. They build up a new army from scratch, right on the battlefield and succeeded in pushing the massive force back. However, at the end, it was only the two of them remaining.
The victory was a mere fleeting moment. The forces had only been pushed away from the frontlines; they could still attack at any given time.
On their way back, they stumbled across a certain find. Taiyou refused to tell us what it was, he said that Yasutsuna-sensei would let us know when we were ready. But he told us that what that find was tore them apart, gave them unimaginable powers and started a vicious cycle.
“Everyone, some of you may have strange marks on your palms, am I right?” Koyama asked. Keito, Inoo, Yabu and Hikaru gaped at their marks before looking back up at him. He smiled.
“For reasons out of the scope of our required knowledge, Nagaryuu now holds a grudge against Yasutsuna-sensei and the world, threatening to unleash the full force of his army to cause complete destruction... unless held back at the right time,”
“Right time?” Yuto wondered aloud.
“Yes, the cycle,” Koyama answered.
“Every 100 years, ten fighters are chosen to be trained by Yasutsuna sensei, these ten fighters have to fight against Nagaryuu’s army and prevent them from leaving the boundaries of Destiny Mountain and the forest that surrounds,” Taiyou added.
“We can never get to the General himself though and that’s why it’s a never ending cycle, we can only drain him of his reserve but never completely defeat him,”
“So the ten before us?” Ryutaro asked curiously.
“Turn around,” Koyama said. The boys did and gaped at the crazy older group behind them standing proudly.
“But…they’re so young,” Yabu stated and flinched as Junno glared at him.
“Well, yes, we were only slightly older than you,” Yamapi answered looking at Yabu.
“See, the thing is, it hasn’t been 100 years since the last battle,” the girl finally spoke up as all turned to look at her.
“Something is happening, and Yasutsuna sensei believes, that with your group we might have a chance to end this cycle, to get to the
General and defeat him, once and for all.”
The boys were silent an indication for Kaori to continue.
“When all ten of you get those marks on your hands, you will have completed stage one of your training which will be commenced with your seniors with immediate effect, stage two will be with Yasutsuna sensei himself,”
“Any questions?”
“Yes Ryutaro-kun,”
Ryutaro looked surprised that she knew his name nonetheless he raised a question the entire group wanted an answer to.
“There’s no pulling back is there?” he asked quietly. Kaori looked at him and smiled sadly, but what she said next made every head in the arena turn towards her in surprise.
“Your mother and brother are his captives right now, the villages that you all come from are on his hit list, would you just sit and watch as it all fades away?”
Ryutaro’s face had turned pale as he blinked at her in shock and utter despair. Yabu moved forward, a little hesitant and placed both hands on his shoulders. He then looked up at Kaori and said;
“Don’t worry, we’re not backing off.”
*
It’s what we were looking for… a channel to just let it all out…
“So, are you going to tell me?”
“What?”
“What happened after you left?”
Hikaru remained quiet, avoiding the elder’s gaze.
Yabu scowled. He walked towards the window of the small room they were going to share from henceforth and pulled the sliding flaps apart. He coughed as some dust flew into his mouth.
Hikaru was by his side in a second.
“Are you okay?” he asked anxiously. Yabu stopped coughing and looked at the other, dark brown eyes glinting in the sunlight.
“Yeah, unfortunately, I’m completely fine now,”
“Unfortunately?” Hikaru asked bemused.
Yabu sat on his futon and pulled his knees close.
“Don’t you want to know where Shoon is?”
Hikaru’s eyes widened at the hard look on Yabu’s face. He nodded slowly.
“Tell me your story, and I’ll tell you mine,”
Hikaru gulped and looked at his hands, fidgeting with the hem of his blanket. Yabu smiled slightly at the familiar action and cast a furtive glance behind the younger boy where Taiyou stood outside the door, listening intently.
“I was found by a man called Nanabe Toichi, he was the head of a nomadic group of entertainers who performed around the country and in royal courts. He cared for me and trained me because he said I was ‘adorable’ and good at ‘lifting the atmosphere’.”
Hikaru chuckled.
“Things were going pretty well, until one day I decided to take a walk and I ended up wandering too far and as always…into a palace,”
“Palace?”
“Yeah, emperor Fujiwara’s for that matter,”
“Well, you do have that strange habit,”
“Shut up Kota,”
“Sorry,”
“As I was saying, you know I hate cat’s right? Well there was this annoying girl who was crying because her creepy little kitten-thing with too much fur was stuck on a high tree branch,”
“Annoying girl?” Yabu asked interestedly. Hikaru stretched his legs and stared at his toes as he wiggled them distractedly.
“We almost got married,”
Yabu gaped.
“You’re what, 17?
“I know but-,”
“Okay forget that, than what happened?”
“We were running away after the palace got attacked and then we were confronted by this creepy lady and her cabal of Shadow Soldiers,”
“Maya,”
Hikaru jumped as Taiyou stepped into the room quickly and sat next to Yabu. Hikaru glared at him but an even frightening glare from Yabu
coxed him on.
“Well I couldn’t fight off her men at all, they were so strong. I remember tumbling off a cliff and into a pool of water, and the next thing I knew
was waking up in Yabu’s room,”
“Who’s Maya?”
“She’s a warrior and a witch, one of the General’s key assets. He selects people to join his inner circle, shares his power with them. We will have to face them too. Maya’s been plotting against us from the beginning, she was that fortune teller that came to your family, she came to mine too, just a night before I left,”
Hikaru stared at him.
“That’s why I left Hachibee, so she wouldn’t have to get my parents involved, I’m not a warrior like you guys, but Yasutsuna sensei wanted my knowledge and my intelligence, so did Nagaryuu, that’s why she came for me,”
Hikaru dropped his gaze to the floor, trying to process everything. He jumped as he felt the lanky boy embrace him.
“I’m sorry for breaking our promise,”
Hikaru chocked on his tears before pushing the boy away forcefully.
“Stop that, you’re annoying,” he replied, voice breaking. Taiyou smiled softly. Yabu sighed deeply, relieved.
“Ko-chan…Shoon wa?”
Yabu gulped. He could feel the prickling in his eyes but he willed himself to hold it together. He stood up quickly.
“He…he went missing as well,”
The awkward silence that followed was fleeting.
“Well now that we’re together, we’ll go look for him,” Taiyou said cheerfully. Hikaru’s frown disappeared and he nodded enthusiastically.
Yabu turned away, lips twitching.
It’s what we all searched for…Vindication…

“Hey, you okay?” Yuto asked his new room mate. Ryutaro looked back at him from his futon and nodded with a weak smile.
“I’m going to destroy that general and get my family back,” he stated determined. Yuto nodded encouragingly, looking around their shared
room.
“Yes, and we’ll help of course, me and Ryosuke will,”
“Arigato,” Ryutaro said quietly. Yuto smiled.
“So, we’re roommates for the next few years,”
“Yep,”
“I can’t believe that maggot got Ryo-chan,”
“Huh?”
“Oh…it’s nothing.”
