Chapter 22 - Completing the Circle

“We’re going to look for what?”

“Provisions Inoo-chan, I can’t possibly embark on a rescue mission without provisions!” Hikaru exclaimed indignantly as if it were the most obvious thing in the world.

“We’re going to a warehouse in Tokyo, not travelling across Middle Earth,” Ryutaro muttered annoyed. Hikaru ruffled his hair affectionately as they reached the door of his apartment.

“This sounds exciting doesn’t it?” Daiki piped up from the back. Inoo ignored him.

“By the way Hikaru-kun,” Ryutaro began pointing towards the door as the older boy began a flustered search of his pockets for his keys.

“What if we get lost in there?”

“Yeah, it’s a pig sty really, no offence Hika-chan,” Inoo added seriously. Hikaru stopped in his search momentarily and shot his best friend a glare.

“It’s just a little messy, why do you guys have to make so much of a fuss over it,” Hikaru huffed grabbing his hair in frustration after turning all his pockets inside out.

“We’re not making a fuss at all Hikaru, just pointing out your irresponsible nature in your otherwise flawless personality,”

“I’m not irresponsible!” Hikaru shouted aiming a kick at the door. It swung open.

“You…forgot to lock it,” Daiki guffawed as the others gaped.

Inoo stifled a laugh as Hikaru marched in with his head held high. He had only taken a few steps before the peculiarity of his surroundings struck him like a jolt of electricity. He froze and stared, trying to absorb what he was seeing.

“Is this…?” Inoo began, wide-eyed.

“-really your apartment?”

Hikaru’s eyes scanned the area; from the shine on the vinyl wood flooring, to the flowers in the vase on the little coffee table, nothing about his home seemed like… his. His clothes that were usually littered on the floor were folded neatly on his bed, visible through the open door.

The glass on his windows sparkled under the sunlight and the curtains were pulled to the side. There was no trash; empty bottles and jars, wrappers and scrap paper that usually littered the place. His eyes widened as he stared at the spotless kitchenette.

“This place…smells like…lavender?” Daiki mused, breathing in deep.

“Hikaru, did you get a housekeeper?” Inoo asked, stunned.

“The hell? Did you get a wife?” Ryutaro exclaimed.

“Oh, you’re back,”

Four pairs of eyes fell immediately upon the lanky boy leaning against the wall, swinging Hikaru’s keys around his fingers with an amused smile playing on his lips.

“Yabu?” Inoo began bewildered.

“What the hell is going on here?”

“Are you guys serious?”

“I know, it sounds far-fetched, but…I’m just too tired of sitting and waiting for news of dad and Keisuke and I want them back…now,”

“It’s going to be dangerous though,”

“They’re willing to risk their lives for my family…I don’t know if I will ever be able to repay them,”

Yuto sighed.

“Then, I’m coming with you guys,”

“But you’re mom just told me that you’re sick,”

“I’ll sneak out, and it’s no big of a deal, I just missed a few meals that’s all,”

Keito frowned.

“I don’t know Yuto,”

“Oh shut it, just tell me where you guys are and I’ll be there in a few minutes,”

“I guess, just come over to the studio,”

“Great, see you there!”

Keito stared at the phone as his friend hung up. There had been something really odd with his voice. He just hoped…that Yuto wasn’t doing
anything more reckless than what they were about to.

“Yuyan, when a young man gets a driver’s license, he actually does something with it,”

Takaki frowned.

“What’s wrong with Josephine?”

Chinen cocked an eyebrow while Ryutaro stuffed his fist into his mouth.

“Are you seriously telling me…that you actually…named it?”

Takaki rubbed the back of his neck with a sheepish smile on his face. Chinen narrowed his eyes, his laser vision scanning the old white and blue school bus.

“No way,” he snapped. Takaki hung his head. Ryutaro gave meek tugs to Chinen’s sleeve but stumbled backwards as the older boy exploded.

“THERE IS NO WAY I AM RIDING AN OLD SCHOOL BUS THAT SMELLS LIKE SPILT MILK TO THE YAKUZA’S LAIR!”

“Now now Chinen-kun,”

The boy glared at Hikaru and his toothy-grin.

“Beggars can’t be choosers, now can they?”

And so, 7 boys clambered aboard the bus, flinching at the smell of spoilt milk, ignoring Inoo’s shriek as he sat upon a lollipop stuck to his seat and trying to contain themselves as they watched Takaki hauling a wailing Chinen aboard before making himself comfortable in the driver’s seat.

As the engine of the rickety vehicle was brought to life, Keito threw a concerned glance at the tall boy sitting next to him, head leaning against the window, and a small smile on his face.

“I bet he’s going to be surprised,”

Keito smiled slightly and nodded.

“He sure will be.”
