Chapter Five - The Second Crack

Suzuka walked with careful steps, brows furrowed in confusion. It was a physical barrier, but what amazed her was its strength. She could no longer reach him.

She placed her hands upon the thick wall of ice standing between her and the unconscious boy and flinched. Even through her gloves, the cold bit into her skin.

She smiled nonetheless.

“Whatever, I still won,”

Alice stood with her blade raised, eyes lingering upon the boy crouching on the floor, a hand on his side, trying to hold in the outpouring of blood.

Her gaze traveled to the solid wall of ice behind him, caging in his vulnerable companion. The frost had successfully lowered the temperature of the vicinity and she had to slide her hand over her blade to rid it of the icicles forming upon it.

She sheathed her sword and dusted herself.

“I would appreciate your acknowledgement of my victory in today’s duel,” she said, her tone icy. Her gaze though softened as he looked up at her, pale from the loss of blood.

“I would expect a better match next time,” she continued and bowed swiftly. She gave one last look to the crystalline wall behind him before turning on her heels and walking away. Yuto closed his eyes, the sound of her boots growing distant with time. He groaned as the slightest movement caused him pain.

“I lost to a girl, great,” he muttered, leaning against the wall.

“Yuto!”

He squinted at the figure rushing towards him and smiled as he recognized the warmth enveloping him seconds later.

“Yabu-kun ohaiyo!” he slurred, eyes refusing to open. Yabu threw Miyano, a bewildered look.

“He’s losing blood,” Miyano exclaimed and gently lifted the boy’s hand from his wound. Yabu cringed at the sight of the blood and tightened his hold on the younger boy.

“Who did this to you?” he asked softly. He watched Miyano place her hand upon his wound with no hesitance and seconds later she pulled away, leaving a scar-less patch of skin visible through the blood rimmed tear in Yuto’s shirt.

“Yuto?” Yabu called out. The boy stirred.

“Yabu-kun,” he mumbled.

“Yes?”

“Dai-chan, in there,”

Yabu’s eyes widened as he stared at the wall of ice Yuto was pointing at. Letting go of him, he got to his feet quickly and touched it with both hands. It took a few seconds, but the ice quickly altered into a wall of transparent fluid, remaining in place. Miyano gaped in wonder.

They could see the Daiki curled against the concrete wall, holding himself tightly.

“I didn’t freeze him did I?” Yuto croaked anxiously. The wall of water then fell, like a curtain before a stage. Daiki scurried towards Yabu, away from the other still standing wall of ice and almost slipping on the puddle on the floor.

“What in the world happened down here?” Yabu questioned them sternly, placing his jacket around a shivering Daiki.

“Let’s find Yamachan first, then I’ll do the explanation,” Yuto said getting to his feet. He touched the place where the blade had struck and nodded reassuringly towards a concerned Miyano as he felt no pain.

“Let’s split up,” Yabu suggested.

“We’ll meet again at the stairway leading to the main lobby,”

“Are you two alright?” Miyano asked, unsure of their state. Daiki nodded. Yuto smiled rather weakly.

“Hai, now let’s finish what we came here to do.”

“Do you like it?”

The boy looked up, green eyes bright, cheeks puffed from the food in his mouth. He smiled.

“Oishi!”

“That’s good, now eat up,”

He shuffled to the couch in the corner of the room and sat upon it, taking out his phone. He typed swiftly, messaging Miyano to come to her brother’s room before resuming his watch over the boy happily munching on his curry and rice.

He was shocked though as she appeared on the doorstep 15 minutes later but quickly regained his composure as she approached him, relief in her features.

“We were looking for you,” she said wearily.

“Hayato’s doing well,” he answered nonchalantly, resuming his gaze upon the boy watching them with mild interest.

“What about you?”

Miyano was taken aback by the bitter laugh that escaped his lips.

“Ryosuke?”

He got to his feet and faced her, arms crossed upon his chest, eyes bloodshot.

“You’re just like them, I just realized,”

Miyano frowned.

“Them?”

Ryosuke pushed past her and stopped at the doorway.

“You used me…didn’t you?”

Daiki stood at the doorway, a strange feeling stirring at the pit of his stomach. He could feel Yuto stiffen next to him as Yabu examined the unconscious man on the floor.

“We should call someone, this man’s out cold,” he said finally. He spotted an ID hanging from the man’s neck and he frowned upon reading his name.

“So, you’re Kawashima,”

“Can’t we just leave him here?” Yuto snapped, his eyes upon the blood stains on the white sheets of the bed. Daiki looked at him, surprised.

Yabu shook his head.

“No, we need to figure things out quickly, before something even more serious happens,”

Yabu got to his feet and looked at the two.

“We need to protect the others, no matter what the cost.”
