Chapter Three - Decency

“I’m afraid I still don’t get it professor, what exactly is your true aim?”

Alice frowned as she watched the professor lean back in his chair, the light of the flames from the fireplace flickering upon his features, his gray eyes cold and mysterious behind his steel-rimmed spectacles.

“Years ago, my partner made a revolutionary discovery about the human DNA in an attempt to save the life of his leukemic son,”

Alice slipped her hands through the sleeves of her coat, eyes focused upon her uncle, mind upon his words.

“He came with a very interesting formula, a formula with great military value,”

“Military?”

The professor nodded, lighting a cigar and placing in his mouth. He breathed in deep before releasing a puff of smoke into the air. He watched it float above and disperse into nothingness with a small smile on his face.

“He was a rather obstinate man though and refused to share the formula even with me, his best friend and partner,”

“Did he manage to heal his son?”

“Well, not really, he couldn’t administer a newly developed substance to his precious child immediately now could he?”

“Yamada?”

The man let out a small chuckle and nodded.

“Then a certain company made a deal with him that he couldn’t refuse and his son being on the brink of death pushed him to complete his
research, so he tried it out,”

“On one of their Idols?”

“That child was merely an insignificant addition to their talents, nobody expected him to blossom so wonderfully,”

“So what happened to him…I mean your partner?”

“The drug almost killed the boy and Hiroshi attempted to flee with all of his research, but he was found by some of his fellow scientists
and…disposed off,”

“You killed him?”

The professor merely shrugged.

“My knowledge had always been far more superior than his and it was his pride that kept him from consulting me, I took his son and my team managed to prolong his life pretty well, but the formula, unfortunately it was written in some kind of code which nobody on my team
could decipher and then…she came along,”

“Miyano Sakura,” Alice guessed picking up her profile from the professor’s desk.

“The company had her to replace her father and she understood the formula so well that she even managed to produce a diluted, less harmful drug from it,”

“I don’t get it though; Yamada was dying from the original wasn’t he?” Alice asked bemused. The professor smiled gleefully.

“See that’s the beauty of this mystery, of what exactly happened that night… the night that his little heart stopped beating…,”

Yabu stood on his heels, hands behind his back as he watched Miyano pull out a bunch of keys from her bag. He wondered if the rest had reached home yet. He hoped they had.

Miyano turned the knob and pushed the door, freezing mid way at the sound of voices. Yabu looked at her bemused as she breathed in deep, as if bracing for some kind of impact.

And it came. Upon entering the house, Miyano was greeted by the worried voice of a motherly looking woman.

“Sakura? Do you know what time it is?”

Yabu paused at the door at the sound of a male voice.

“Leave it Aunty, you remember how uncle used to be, working late into the night,”

“But she’s still a student and she’s this busy, she’ll hardly be home when she starts working!” grumbled Miyano-san shuffling into the kitchen and putting the kettle onto the stove.

“Hi Sakura,” the young man on the couch said with a soft smile. Sakura nodded, smiling back.

“Are you finally home now?” Miyano-san asked, hands on her waist. Sakura blinked back her exhaustion and tears and shook her head.

“What?” her mother exclaimed. The young man was eyeing the half open door curiously.

“He’s a very-,” Sakura began but was cut off as her mother marched towards her.

“A very important patient? You’ve always had this very important patient as your excuse Sakura. It’s been over a year, and I’m tired of you
spending all your time with this “patient”,”

Yabu’s eyes widened as he realized who Miyano-san was referring too.

“I thought you said that he was fine now?” the man asked curiously. Sakura turned her head, catching Yabu’s gaze in hers before beckoning
him inside.

“Who’s there?” the man asked following Miyano’s gaze. There was a thick silence in the air as Yabu walked in and bowed.

“Yabu Kota dess,” he said keeping his head low.

“He’s a relative of that patient,” Sakura voiced out surprising all the other three in the room with the tiredness of her voice.

“Yabu Kota? The Johnny?” her mother gasped walking closer towards Yabu. She bent forwards slightly and peeked up to his face as if to
confirm his identity. She jumped back with an exclamation. Yabu stood up and looked at her confused.

“She’s a fan of Kinki Kids,” Sakura explained, a little embarrassed as her mother continued staring at him, hands on her mouth.

“Why in the world is he here then?” the young man asked, clearly miffed.

“Yabu-kun, this is Keisuke Aoi, my neighbor,”

Yabu bowed slightly in greeting to which Aoi replied politely.

“Would you like something to eat?” Miyano-san asked Yabu as Sakura made her way into her room. Yabu shook his head and bowed gratefully.

“We need to get back to the hospital as soon as possible Miyano-san,” he replied politely. He stood there, counting the minutes and trying to avoid the stares from the other two in the room. Aoi seemed rather suspicious but Miyano-san seemed star-struck.

He sighed with relief as Miyano rushed out of her room with a small bag slung upon her shoulder.

“Here, have these sandwiches,” Miyano-san said handing Yabu two boxes of Tupperware. Miyano looked rather flustered as she opened the door. She waited for Yabu to exit first. Yabu had just begun his steps when his phone rang.

“Are you sure?”

Miyano frowned at the panic on Yabu’s face.

“What’s wrong?” she asked as he slipped his phone back into his pocket.

“It was Dai-chan, he says Ryosuke’s gone missing.”
