Chapter Thirteen - Internal Strife

Ryutaro looked up into the sky. The velvety blackness was fading slowly, giving way to a pale gray. He shivered in the chill and looked ahead.

They were near the coastal highway.

“Now what?”

Hayato looked back at him and shrugged.

“I knew how to get out of the harbor, but I have no idea how to get to the city,”

Ryutaro sighed deeply. He looked behind him. Beyond the forest, he could make out the sea. The warehouses were well shielded from view by the lush greenery.

“Do you know the coordinates of the place perhaps, or even the postal address?” Ryutaro asked. Hayato stared at him.

“Um…no, not really,”

Ryutaro groaned. Now what?

“Ryutaro-kun,”

“What?”

“I don’t feel so good,”

Ryutaro’s eyes widened as Hayato collapsed right next to him. He grabbed the boy’s cold form and gasped at the paleness of his face.

“What’s wrong with you?”

Hayato shook his head.

“I don’t…know, I feel so weak all of a sudden,” he replied, voice barely a whisper.

“No, wait no Hayato…don’t leave me alone…what am I going to do alone?” Ryutaro gushed, checking the other’s pulse. It was rapid.

Hayato’s eyes were glazed over.

Ryutaro turned his head as he heard the sound of an approaching vehicle. His eyes widened as he realized it was a bus.

“Hold on Hayato, I’m going to get you to Tokyo, just hold on for a bit longer okay?”

“I don’t get you,”

Inoo continued staring at the figure crumpled against the brick wall. The rain had lessened to a drizzle and his hand stung from where it had collided with the younger boy’s jaw.

“You’re behaving this way because…I’ve changed?”

Inoo gasped as he felt himself slam against the wall opposite him, his feet dangling in the air as he struggled against the almost rib braking invisible force that held him up.

Daiki got to his feet, locking his eyes with Inoo’s.

“Yes, you’ve changed and I’ve never felt this useless before!”

“I don’t understand…DAIKI PUT ME DOWN!”

“NO!”

Inoo stopped struggling and stared at the younger. Was Daiki….was he crying?

It was hard to tell whether it was the raindrops on his face or his own tears, but with the pained expression on the boy’s face, he guessed it
was probably both.

“You were never like this before, you could never ride a bike and pull those stunts…you used to be afraid of your own shadow!”

Inoo gaped at him.

“That’s why I hate that stupid bike of yours, cause it never fails to remind me that you’re not the boy I’ve known growing up!”

“DAIKI PUT ME DOWN!”

“NO I WON’T!”

Inoo groaned. Why was he being so unreasonable?

“Daiki,” he began more softly as the younger continued staring at the ground. They were both wet and he was sure that a severe bout of flue
was on the way. Still it pained him though, it pained him as he watched his best friend cry silently behind his wet bangs. He couldn’t believe what he was about to do.

“Daiki look at me,”

The boy shook his head.

“Please,” Inoo pleaded. Daiki raised his head slowly, but when his gaze interlocked with the hypnotist’s, he regretted it immediately. Feeling
himself going immobile he felt his telepathic defenses crumble. He staggered backwards feeling as if he had been slapped sharply across
the face and watched Inoo fall onto his feet.

There was nothing but silence for what seemed like an eternity. The only sounds audible were that of the passing cars and the patter of raindrops over concrete and brick.

“We’re pathetic aren’t we, using our powers on each other,” Daiki mumbled softly, looking anywhere but at the older boy.

“It’s adrenaline,”

“Huh?”

Daiki looked up as Inoo twiddled with his thumbs; gaze locked onto them as if it were a task requiring great concentration.

“It’s not courage Daiki, its adrenaline,”

Daiki shook his head blankly.

“I talked to Miyano-san about it, you think I hadn’t noticed?”

Inoo leaned back into the wall, a small, strange smile on his face.

“You know how, when we are too afraid…our body responds by secreting the hormone adrenaline. For a few fleeting moments, it makes
you stronger, faster…you gain the ability to act on instinct…you either flee, fight or freeze,”

“So…what does this-?”

“My body secrets excess adrenaline even if I get slightly scared, the stunts you see me pull are just adrenaline rush…every time I get
frightened or panic…this makes me act the way I do…and it overshadows my emotional reactions to the situation,”

“Isn’t excess of anything bad for our bodies?”

Inoo looked up at Daiki.

“Miyano-san said that my body has somehow adopted, that’s why I’m not always getting panic attacks or worse things like that, I don’t know Daichan, this isn’t really my field, so I’m not sure how to really explain…,”

He was silenced immediately as Daiki pulled him into a hug.

“I’m sorry,”

Inoo closed his eyes, exhaling a deep breath of relief. He hugged the other boy back.

“It’s alright silly. Let’s just forget we even had this fight okay?”

“I was just afraid that you wouldn’t need me anymore,” Daiki mumbled feeling exhaustion finally taking over. Inoo chuckled softly.

“Baka, that will never, ever happen, remember that.”

Note: Adrenaline is a hormone that initiates the flight-fright-freeze response in the human body. During an adrenaline rush (rapid secretion of adrenaline in response to a stressful situation), there is a rapid increase in heart rate, breathing and the body's overall capability to deal with dangerous or exhilarating situations.
