The circus that is going on down in Olympia right now has brought up a lot of religious discussion as of late. Outside of the whole debate over Christmas (which I think is absurd because Christmas is a pretty secular holiday in this country), there's a lot of talk about the "majority of Americans are Christian" and the "small minority of non- ( Read more... )

Just cause I find numbers like this interesting...

I found a set of stats for Washington state alone from 2001 that lists other, none and refused as separate things - and the total of those three in that study comes to almost 25%, compared to 63% for Christian. WA has the largest percentage of people in America that identify themselves as 'non-religious'. I can't claim to have read the whole thing (cause I'm poor and didn't pay to walk out of the bookstore with it), but there was a book called something like "Religion and Life in the PNW" that dealt very well with the topic and the fact that the PNW is comparatively more secular than the rest of the country.

K, shutting up now. I just find it all quite interesting. And yes, Christmas is so secular now I don't know why people get all hung up over it.

Wow, I guess that doesn't suprise me too much. I bet the number increases dramatically if you only count Western Washington as well. I'll have to check out that book. Sounds like it's right up my alley :)
