I want to pick the brains of any old fans who remember any conversations with Danny and Paul about why they chose the black panther as Jim's spirit animal
( Read more... )
Thanks for the link. Yes, that is the kind of thing I was reading up on and it really struck me how the symbolism fitted so neatly. In this site : http://theleopardmen.com/leopards-and-mythology/ it says panthers are considered protectors of the universe in Native American mythology and the Zuni called the puma The Sentinel of the north! I had forgotten about The Jags game in Cypher. I will need to go back and check for the first appearance of Jim's Jags cap! I guess that proves they wanted the panther symbol well embedded from the start.
WOW! I've been a bit busy and have only just spotted that you are writing this! It sounds wonderful - can't wait to read it! :))
Edit: Ooops, just thought I really ought to try to add something erudite here, rather than just WOOHOO!
Everything you and Merlin say sounds spot-on (especially feline grace... *g*) and though TS cinematic work is not always that brilliant in terms of effects, I like the shapeshifting parts and *love* the transformation of the jaguar into Soldier!Jim. With the headband Jim's face takes on another quality, and maybe they've enhance the image as well to make it look more pointed and angular. Jim running through the forest in Flight is also pretty feline!
I wonder if you've seen this website - completely random google, but
www (dot) pure (hyphen) spirit (dot) com (fwd slash) more (hyphen) animal (hyphen) symbolism (fwdslash306hyphen)jaguar (hyphen) symbolism
Phew! There is some interesting stuff in that short page e.g . The jaguar, specifically panther, is linked to the Roman god Bacchus (Greek Dionysus
( ... )
Yes, I loved the links with Dionysus and the unleashing of hidden desires. "The panther is a symbol of subconscious desires and abilities." I can just see Blair in lecture mode delivering that little nugget to Jim. Lots of ways that conversation could go from a fanfic perspective.*g*
