roger's gave me a bunch of software when I got cable. I don't even use it, XP is such a slut for internet.
if your PC is spontaniously shutting down it could be 1 of a few things.
1) overheat as you have said. Check mobo setting to make sure the chip wasn't overclocked (some retailers do this so they can sell a 3.2gig computer when it is really a 2.8gig, and so on), and check fan speed. 2) the reboot virus that's been around for YEARS. If you've got an older version of windows that hasn't been updated and you lack virus software, you may have been nailed.
I thought the software was necessary for setting up accounts and passwords and such, but there's no need for any of that (just use proxy, poof). Thanks, I'll see if I can get a closer look at the mobo. While I know what it is, I have never messed with overclocking personally (because I think it is asking for trouble). I am ruling out viruses since the problem persisted even when the hard drives were empty with no connection to any network. If the problem occurs during a fresh install after formatting the whole thing, viruses can't do that.
