new thinky thought based on that post - lots of people are thinking the island moved just in location? i'll bet it moved in time too..... wow! so the questions are Where and When is the island? which could explain why Jack couldn't get back to the island....
the correction is this: i thought that the polar bears might have gotten to the island because the island may have been in polar-bear-climate at one time. entil2001 said that Dharma brought them as part of the initial experiments.
also, in blankreloaded's post over at at _we_are_lost, deeptown_girl pointed out that "all the forests would freeze and die and it would take hundreds of years for the trees to grow back when it was moved to the tropical region."
so, forget my part about the polar bears. see? Lost makes my brain oooze out my ears, and i just can't stuff it all back in.....
