You know my thinking. I don't know why, but I think he's workign with Ruby and/or he believes Sam is the one who can beat that other demon we learned about last week. I think the Trickster doesn't want to change the world like the demons do and sees Sam as the one who can stop it.
right - someone on my yahoo group posted her review, and simply wondered if the Trickster (Loki, heh) "has some sort of stake in the outcome of the demon war."
Yeah, at this point it's all just speculation, but the 'teach you a lesson' speech has me thinking there's more than just 'oh, this is fun' to the hell he put Sammy through. *sniffles* Poor Sammy.
I'm wondering what the Trickster's role in the war is. Because he's a god, is he not supposed to interfere? We know he likes the Winchesters, and Sammy has his moments where he can be taken down a peg, but I got the sense that he was trying to help Sam for Sam's sake. He couldn't save Dean, so he'd do what he could for Sam. And he didn't want to send Sam back.
I have no idea what any of this means without a larger context, but I'm going to continue to drive myself crazy trying to figure it out.

Actually he's an old God and they didn't have non interference rules plus Loki - always interfering in Norse mythology.
Loki is always out for himself. If he wants a place after the war my guess is he's trying to figure out which side will win and throw his support to the eventual winner.
See my review - Yup, I think he does have a stake in it - what that stake is exactly not sure. Perhaps Demons would cut in on his territory, put a crimp in his mischief, or demons are as much a threat to him as they are to humans. Demons might not want him around because of what he is capable of. OR, he is working with Ruby...This was done to help make Sam stronger, darker...preparing him for when Dean is dead. It would seem odd if it was just a coincidence that he chose Sam and it was about killing Dean to teach him a lesson.
But who knows, we shall just have to stayed tuned.

I don't know. Maybe he just thinks that a demon war would disrupt his life. If the humans lost who would he have to torment?

But I think it could be seen from two different points of view.
A- he works for the rising leader and he tried to break Sam and to let him understand Dean can't be saved.
B- he wanted Sam to find a strong motivation to avoid Dean's dead and showing him how dark he is going to become, worked.
Both ways I think he was tricking with the boys and I can't actually say what he wants.
