Her eyes shot daggers at me.

“Look, you’ve been saying for months now that things can’t work between us, that we live in different worlds. And I didn’t want to hear you, but maybe you’re right. You can’t come back to my world and I’m not ready to join yours.”

I thought for only a second.

“Wait. You think that that’s what this is about? You think I’m gonna wanna turn you?”

Actually, I think I did. I don’t know.

“Wouldn’t you? Eventually?” she retorted, but she was close to tears. “And what happens when I start to get old? Maybe then I’d want it, too. I don’t ever want to have to make that decision. Emma and Jackson made me realize that you were right. I don’t think I can do this anymore.”

I didn’t know what to say. All I could do was leave. In the hallway, I slammed my forehead against the wall and fought back the tears.

I spent the past 55 years trying to close the door on forever. But I couldn’t anymore. I can’t close the door on Beth.

I went back and knocked on her door, but as expected, she didn’t reply. I opened the door myself, and spoke to her. I knew by her posture she was listening to me.

“You want to know what Emma and Jackson made me realize? That you were right,” I admitted. “You were right all along. This isn’t about being a vampire or a human. This is about us and how we feel about one another right here, right now.”

She asked me what she was wearing the night we’d met again, when she was all grown up this time. I knew exactly and told her. And then I kissed her. And never wanted to let go.

She’d wanted to know how many people I’d turned. How could I tell her the answer was none? More to the point, would she even believe me?

I’d had only a few freshies, but mainly at Josef’s insistence. That’s his thing - parties, girls, snacks. My thing had been what Coraline had offered me - a chance to be human again. And I was for a time. It was a new lease on life.

But since Beth will always be a reporter, I’ve always known her to get in trouble of some sort or other - that’s her thing. The only way I could save her the last time was as a vampire. Even though Josef hates my snarky comments about him being my step-sire, he was the one that returned me to being the thing that I hated.

And now, as I kissed Beth, I realized she was the only thing that mattered to me.
She broke the kiss, and took a step back. She searched my face, and her gaze lingered on my eyes.

“What is it?” I asked.

“Your... eyes,” she said. I couldn’t tell if it was fear or awe in her voice. It also told me my eyes were white, as they are when my fangs are out too. It seemed it wasn’t only anger that caused my eyes to change.

“Mick? Are you all right?” she asked with concern and a little alarm.

“I’m ... fine.” I turned away from her towards the wall. I seemed to be doing that too much lately. I felt her hand on my shoulder, and I knew in the back of my mind she meant it to be a comforting gesture. I took in a deep breath, and was filled with Beth - her presence, her scent - and I wanted to know, to feel, to taste, all of her.

But after everything we just told each other about it not mattering, how could I think to even do this to her? She’d said she wouldn’t ever want to have to make that decision. Well, I’ll just make it for her.

In one fluid motion, I turned around to face Beth, then turned us so I was facing the wall again, and pressed her against it. I leaned against her, my human hunger wanting her as much as my vampire hunger.

Her eyes were wide, questioning, and searching my own changed eyes. I gently kissed her lips, and she closed her eyes. I moved her head to the left, exposing the soft skin of her neck. Before I changed my mind, I bared my fangs and sank them into her flesh.

I felt her body stiffen, but then she relaxed and sagged against me. Holding her limp, unconscious body, we sank to the floor. I gently placed her head on the floor, and used my fangs to draw my own blood from my arm.

I pressed my arm to her mouth as the blood dripped inside. I’d never done this before, only hoped that it worked. After only a moment, I felt her lips tighten against my arm, and she was drinking from me. I had to stop her with a gentle touch on her cheek, and was able to take my arm away.

She sat up, and glared at me with changed eyes.

“Oh my god! What did you do?”

Humans. Why do they ask rhetorical questions all the time?

“I... I thought that didn’t matter to us?” she said, and I couldn’t tell if she was whining, pouting, or both.

“It’ll take some getting used to,” I pointed out.

“The hell it will,” she said, standing. I stood up where I’d been kneeling, and all I could do was helplessly watch as she grabbed her purse and yanked open her front door. She turned back to me, hatred in her now-blue eyes.

“I want you gone when I get back,” she hissed.

“Where are you - ” I started, but she’d closed the door already. “ - going?” I lamely finished to an empty apartment.

~*~
There were only two places I thought she’d go, but since we had no idea where Lance took Coraline, that left only Josef.

There’d been something odd in her behavior, her questions, these last few weeks, wanting to know what a vampire does when he thinks he’s about to be outed. I wondered if there was something she knew.

But with Beth most likely turning to Josef about what I did, and a new ADA who doesn’t know what to make of me, I’ll be more than gone from just Los Angeles whenever she gets back. If she even comes back.
