Yuletide recs

Dec 27, 2013 20:21

AO3 remains the only bibliographic index user of which I am aware that, infuriatingly, continues to list books under title and not author's surname as a primary reference. Grumpily, I've done the same here.

Recs:

Recs in: Zhuāngzǐ, Appalachian Murder Ballads, Black Sheep, The Charioteer, The Eagle, Edward II, The Fast and the Furious, Frankenstein, The Hour, Irish Mythology, The Losers, Maiden Rose, Moby Dick, The Outsiders, The Romance of Silence, Roustabout, Rush, Stalky and Co, The Sting, Swallowa and Amazons, Swordspoint, The Wire )

yuletide, recs

Read The Outsiders fic because you recced it and thank you. Awesome story. To return the favor Alliances in the Harry Dresden storied is awfully damn good, but you do have to know the books to get and I mean know all the books up through Cold Days. I've certainly read a LOT more, but none that were particularly wonderful.

I liked the Black Sheep story too. I've not yet read all the Heyer ones though one sounds like it might be dreadful--oh, maybe not. When I read incest, I was afraid that it was going to be Robin and Prudence from The Masqueraders which would just--just--No. But it's the twins from False Colours which is not among my favorites. The second one from Cotillion is amusing.

Hope you continue to enjoy both Yuletide and the HL fanfic. Laters.

dswdiane, I'm really sorry to be late replying to you - I wanted to read Alliances before I did, and I kind of feel fandomly obliged to keep up to date with hlh_shortcuts first! But now I have, and you're absolutely right - even without knowing the Dresden Files well, this is a lovely piece of writing! Thank you very much for mentioning, because I wouldn't have read it otherwise, and I'd have missed out.

So I'm really glad you liked the Outsiders piece too! The Heyer - eh, I'm picky about Heyer, it's one of the few canons where I really like canon pairings, you know? I grew up on Heyer, so... which is a shame, because I'm sure I'm missing out on some lovely writing, but. Hope you enjoyed all of it!

- given this is such a late reply, it's lovely to be able to say to you this evening, Happy New Year! I hope it's lovely for you, both within fandom and outside as well. Very best wishes!

I totally agree with you about Heyer. I love the canon pairing and can't imagine Sophie without Rivenhall or Frederica without Alverstoke. Still would love to read about them ten years later.

I was astonished when I Capture the Castle came back into print because J.K.Rowling said she liked it. I had owned it as partially cover less book since I had found it in a thrift shop back in the 60's. I was also astonished to discover a well developed, well made sequel in Yuletide a couple of years ago.

I am so glad you liked Alliances. I thought it was very well plotted and written.

I am also amazed and pleased that you're so capable of saying something kind about almost every story in hlh_shortcuts. There are a few--well--I will say no more--But I agree with you totally on the ones upon which you have bestowed your highest accolades.

So, I am sure you're likely in bed by now, but I will still wish you a happy, prosperous, healthy and gratifying year to come. Good wishes.

Oh my. I kind of can't get past the idea of a crossover between Mary Renault and Arthur Ransome. (I might have asked you this before but have you read Marcus Sedgewick's novel about Arthur Ransome in Russia? It's really good.)

I am going to have to read that Irish one, aren't I...
