It's getting late in the game to show any pride or shame / Burn a little brighter now

State of play:

yuletide, people. FYI. (Not that it really matters, just in case anyone wanders over from AO3.) Last year's yuletide was pretty much amazing - isiscolo's Minstrel's Song (Rosemary Sutcliff's Knight's Fee) was a story I absolutely loved to pieces. Still do, not to take away from all the smashing stories that preceeded it - and I wrote more than I'd ever ( Read more... )

yuletide, recs

Gah! You and your recs! You tempt me to read other fandoms as well as point me to irresistible SPN treats and I have a reading list as long as my HOUSE already!!!!!!!!!!
Damn you.

So I'm going to get my own back now...
Did you read any summergen fics this year? There were some absolutely fabulous ones...
Like this one by clefink http://spn-summergen.livejournal.com/161105.html
or this one by indiachick http://spn-summergen.livejournal.com/162556.html
and this by snickfic (for me!!) http://spn-summergen.livejournal.com/162679.html
and this one by brutti_ma_buoni http://spn-summergen.livejournal.com/164423.html

Woman, this is a horrible temptation! I have not read any summergen at all (Maaaybe? It's actually hard to remember, I am stuffed full of science books and not fic) and would love to!

...and just as I have taken these rec'd fics *off* my favourites list and it shortens to managable levels...it lengthens again!

But I am grateful all the same! Thank you - and hope all is well with you!

The good thing about summergen - most of the fics are fairly short. Well mine wasn't that short but most others were. LOL

Yay for survival! At some point I will post again. Right now I am happy that I seem to be writing again, which is an enormous relief. Still no job though.

Question - I'm nominating Sulamith Wulfing - Works as one of my nominations. I am currently dithering on whether to keep the 'characters' I have now, which are archetypes/figures she uses a lot: Knight, Child, Lady, Spirit, or go with specific paintings for characters. Those would be:

--Silent Heart (http://www.pinterest.com/pin/237424211578860441/ )
- The Big Friend (http://www.pinterest.com/pin/237424211578860460/ )
- Evening Star (http://www.pinterest.com/pin/237424211578860750/ )
- The Consoler (http://www.pinterest.com/pin/237424211578859177/ )

Survival is the word. I think you'll be familiar.

- I appreciate your urgency, I've just dropped in another nomination myself for someone else. (This is culpable - I am truly not signing up! But I will write the thing if she requests it, so...)

Okay. I think this depends on what you want. If you nominate the archetypes, you could get any picture - or a mixture of them, which could be ascinating. If you nominate the pictures, if written, you're guaranteed to get *a* picture you really love. I also suspect (although I could be so wrong here!) that if you nominate the archetypes and say so, you're more likely to get metafic: if the paintings, traditional story. Nothing you haven't thought already - but where does your heart lie?

I'd be happy with either -- writing or receiving. I guess what I'm really asking is which is more likely to get other requests, or to spark people to want to write?

For my own request, I am going to suggest the specific paintings as jumping off points if I stay with archetypes (and I'm leaning that way), and if I change to the paintings, I will talk about archetypes too.

Ah hah!

Personally, as a writer, I would be much, much ahhpier with your archetypes - I feel it gives me a far broader scope to write? But I would also be very happy if you linked a hypothetical me to your paintings too, as illustrating both the archetypes and the works you really love.

Ergo, I think your lean is in the right direction!

The rest of this post pales into insignificance alongside the revelation that you can *still buy the Be-Ro cookbook*. Which contains just about everything I ever baked for about the first 17 years of my life.

I know! For ages you had to save coupon things, and I never seemed to match my flour-buying (Christmas - even less now my dad's coeliac) to their coupon-providing!

But my own version is peppered with orange juice and melted chocolate stains, notes that the cherry loaf makes the best cupcakes (and how long they should cook), has the exclamation mark where I won my Brownie Cookery badge with the Victoria Scones, notes what I can substitute for normal flour in what quantities for gluten free baking, has hand written fan-oven temperature corrections... the fact that I seldom bake these days makes no difference to the fact that, if I had to save one book, this would be it.

- eek, that's not a good thought. May this never happen!

Fairly sure yours is in the same state!

Will check out both Teen Wolf and XMFC recs - thanks! I know I can trust the fic to be excellent, coming from your word of mouth. May you get through the remainder of your brutal work season with ease (or at least grace, which is actually much more important in my book).

...I feel I may be on the verge of regaining my sense of humour? Grace I have been clinging onto by my splintered fingernails. I lost it, slightly, on Friday afternoon. Given the ice-cold charm of work me, the provocation was spectacular. But, nearly done and reasonably successful: me and my guys get to pay our mortgages for another year and there are still sticky buns baked goods on the menu.

But, fiction today! Or at least, editing - there is sunshine, I am in my own flat in daylight, Star Trek The Reboot 2 is playing, and this morning I gave myself a Vividcon '13 showing, which leads me to this vid. It's sisabet's Victory Dance, Teen Wolf. Given that this is... hm, the third TW vid I have seen in total - and I will never see the series - I really, really liked this vid for what it said about Derek, and have been feeling for weeks that I should to mention it to you.

- hope very much all is well, both with you and with writing.
