$200 is a depressing amount to earn, even for a decent photomanip. But I'm guessing it's what the market will bear - although, as with all things, I would guess that there is an well-paying and poorly-paying option? I must admit, I'm wondering now how this compares to a contracted artists at an established publishing house - I must ask. I don't even know if that's paid by piece or hour. Yet at the same time... I rather suspect most self-published novels are taking a while to earn even that $200 investment back. If (eh, sorry, it's instinctive!) - if the author's on a standard distribution contract (35%), for a book priced at, say, $7.99, they're earning $2.80/copy. That's 72 copies they'll have to sell before they've earned back that initial investment, and before they themselves earn any money. And most self-published novels, I gather, are selling in the low 10s rather thn 100s, although that statistic is anecdotal and not checked ( ... )

Thanks for the recs. I just read "Underground" in one go and it was probably the best fic I've read in this fandom.
