[RL with Mello] Dinner Date

Okina City. The closest metropolitan area within a sixty mile radius to the small, idyllic country town of Inaba. A popular hangout for teenagers and anyone else who needed a little excitement.

Thankfully, the train ride over had been short. Naoto felt that both he and Mello were drawing a little too much attention to themselves. Of course, both of ( Read more... )

Mello was wearing a suit made of dark red suede. Custom tailored for him, obviously, and a black shirt. A thin red bow-tie (much like the blue one Naoto usually wore) completed the outfit, and his rosary stood out against the black nicely. ...at least, or so he thought, he didn't look terribly underdressed next to Naoto, and didn't have to much in common with all the men in white shirts and neckties that seemed to populate Japan. ...as if his haircolor didn't make him stand out enough.

"It's a lot less quiet than Inaba," and if his tone was any indication, he thought that was a good thing, "Do you come here often?"

Naoto found himself momentarily distracted by a loud group of teenagers (probably students from Yasogami High) pass by. Girls and boys both. Their outfits were flashy, almost ostentatious: short skirts, painted nails, jewelry. You rarely saw that sort of thing in Inaba, unless you were deliberately trying to draw attention to yourself. It was amazing how spending a Saturday night in a different city could turn you into an entirely different person...

Hearing Mello's question, Naoto shook his head. "No, not really. I spend most of my time at the estate, actually, except when I'm working on a case. I came here about two months ago to investigate a string of burglaries, though. It wasn't a particularly difficult case."

As they walked, Naoto found himself unconsciously straying closer to Mello. He checked himself, not wanting to walk too close to him, for fear that people might take notice of the two young men and think them more than "just friends".

To Mello, it was as if these people didn't exist. Teenagers like them were the same all around the world, and even though a few of them were looking his way, they might as well not have existed to him.

"You're really not used to cities, are you?" Mello continued to question, trying to draw Naoto's attention away from the people. If they were going to have dinner together, it wouldn't do for his partner to be so nervous.

"Do I really seem like that much of a country bumpkin?" A hint of color rose to his cheeks. "I do enjoy visiting the city, even if it's only for work. But I'm also content staying at the estate. There are plenty of ways for me to occupy myself, when I'm not working on a case."

He raised his eyes skyward. It was impossible to see the stars above the bright lights on the city street. There was something a little disquieting about that fact.

"Actually, I'm just not used to being around people, in general. I guess you could say I'm more of a solitary creature."
