File 59 - Obon Festival

Aug 18, 2010 22:50

Today was the final day for the Oban Festival. The estate was decorated with paper lanterns. I visited Tatsuhime Shrine along with Grampa and Yakushiji-san, and I wore the yukata that Kanji made for me. We even stopped by the Samegawa River, where many people had set loose small boats with candles and votive pictures attached to them.

I feel as ( Read more... )

Winry had a mouthful of bobby pins, trying to put up her hair while looking at herself in a mirror. At least she didn't smell like metal and machine oil, instead, she smelled like something floral from the shower she'd taken.

Her yukata hung on a hook behind her, a pale lavender with purple and blue stylized lotuses blooming around her ankles and knees. Winry couldn't help but look at its reflection in the mirror, hoping she could figure out how to put it on.

Naoto, having already been dressed in a deep blue yukata with a white crane motif, gently knocked at Winry's door with her knuckles.

"Do you need any help getting dressed?" she asked. While Kanji had showed Naoto how to wear a yukata properly, it could be a little difficult getting the hemline to lie perfectly straight without a little assistance. One of the maids had helped her out, so she was satisfied with the silhouette.

Winry looked toward the door, letting out a sigh. "Yes, please, Naoto. Come in, the door's not locked."

She was wearing a light weight camisole and matching panties, both a buttery yellow, with a tiny lace rose centered in her cleavage, not quite sure what sort of underwear she'd need with the yukata. Was it binding enough that she wouldn't need a brassiere?

The door clicked open and Naoto stepped inside. Her hair was parted to one side with a blue butterfly clip.

She approached the vanity, taking small quick strides. One had to walk properly wearing these type of garments if you didn't want it to pull loose in the front.

"Still working on your hair, I see." Naoto smiled a bit. That was one of the advantages of having short hair. "We're hoping to leave in half an hour. Do you think you'll be ready by then?"

The festival of lights. Different regions celebrate it at different times, but it always takes place in midsummer. It's the time when we welcome home the spirits of our loved ones who have passed beyond the veil. For a few days, we celebrate their homecoming with singing, dancing, and families gather together to eat traditional meals. When it is time for the spirits to return home, people light candles and place them on small boats to float down river. The lights guide the spirits to their resting place.

It's been at least a decade since I participated in the festivities like this...

Do you celebrate something similar in your world? In the west, Obon is likened to All Hallow's Eve, or the Day of the Dead.

[Naoto hurried as fast as she could toward the river, her wooden sandals clacking a steady toccata against the pavement. The sleeves of her yukata fluttered with the movement of her arms. One would think she was a small bird about to take flight ( ... )

[he'd set off his boats before he called naoto; one for dad and one for mello. he hadn't known him well, but it was only fair. he had been naoto's brother and by default, his brother. he deserved to be honored in the same regard. he'd watched candles float until they were distant lights on the dark river and he still sat there and watched others' attempts to bring their gone loved ones home slip past. there was something poignant about the whole thing. in this little space, he felt as an observer. the living waiting for the dead instead of the other way around.

but naoto brings him back from the hereafter to the here and now. kanji grunts and shakes his head.] Nah, you didn't.

I'm sorry... I was going to call you as soon as I arrived at the shrine, but I got so caught up with Ed and Winry that I forgot.

[She laces her fingers with Kanji's and leans her head against his shoulder. Stares at the river and the multitude of lights, like fireflies dancing on the water's surface. It reminds her poignantly of the night when Sukuna-Hikona transfigured into Yamato-Takeru...]

The bon odori won't commence for another hour... I promised the others that I'd dance with them and watch the fireworks display afterward. You'll dance with me, won't you?
