Or, you could go ahead and have the key activated and keep it on hand in case something like this ever happens again. Just keep it somewhere safe in your house so that if you ever lose a key for good, you know where the other one is.

Well, if I get the key activated, my current key automatically goes dead. So I'd be back to square one.

Wow, that's dumb.
Every car I've ever owned (all both of them) came with at least two functional keys. And after a key broke off in the lock of my car while I was in Florida years ago, I've become much more cautious about stuff like that.
