I've now decided that convention would probably dictate that they refer to each other by surname in public and reserve first names for, ummm, private conversations. I know the series doesn't really follow that convention but hey, what do they know?! ;)

That's reasonable, but it reminds me of another strange thing. When Simpson mentioned "your little pal Archie" before the duel, Horatio actually looked surprised and said "Kennedy??" Well, Horry, don't tell me you know half a dozen Archies! It's really hard to know what's going on in Horatio's head sometimes.
And yeah, Horatio definitely loves saying "Ahh-chie" in public ;)
You've given this some thought haven't you?! I think Simpson's use of Archie's first name is deliberately demeaning and obviously designed to wind Horatio up. Horatio replies with the more respectful and correct "Kennedy?" Although of course there is always the possibility that Horatio had a thing about Archies and he had a whole string of them! ;)

Maybe it's just me, but I think Horatio looked and sounded surprised when Simpson mentioned Archie. Maybe Horatio did have a whole string of Archies before Archie K., he just loves saying "Ahh-chie" ;)
Really. With a block of oak that heavy, he should by rights have killed him (in the original story, he probably did brain the unfortunate epileptic sailor.)
"Kennedy...." I suspect that was for the viewers who missed the first episode. In that era, they probably would have called each other by surname unless they'd been relatives or at childhood playmates (or, *cough* intimate friends). But "Ah-chie" was probably too charming to resist.

Everyone called each other by surname unless they are Archie and Horatio. That's one of my favourite things about this series :)

Of course, he also calls him Kennedy because these are classic 'explain to the dumb viewer' moments.
