back when gas had just got past $2 a gallon and people started to realize that it isn't going to stop, economists figured that most Americans can afford up to $5.00 a gallon gas, and that its going to take prices in excess of that for enough people to start seriously pushing for a change.

Also, the price of gas will never, ever go down more than 15 cents if it ever stabilizes.

Ugh. I figure, whenever the alternative energy technology that I know we have is released, that concentrated energy will be anywhere from slightly less expensive to way more expensive for a long time, because everyone knows what we're used to and what we can pay for.
