I happened to wake up a couple hours ago after going to sleep early. I'm sorry I looked at the news... Obviously the "shit rolls downhill" theory applies to anyone living in southeastern Michigan

Majority of people working in the area work for the Big Three, then they ALL lose their jobs, people quit eating out, buy less, retail and dining industries suffer, this was the cascade effect that was warned of.

We're screwed here, plain and simple. We've been making plans to get out of the 'burbs and into the country for over a year now, but I dunno if it's going to happen before the crap hits the fan. I can grow all the food I want, but it's going to be all for naught if hungry people poach it before I can harvest! That's not even considering people stealing cars, metal scrap, breaking into homes. I mean, hell, people need food, clothing and shelter, and there's going to be none of that if people aren't working...
I'm having a hard time finding work and I'm in Alaska, one of the places in America least badly hit by the foreclosures/economic crisis, though the drop in oil prices has hurt the Alaskan state budget. Everyone seems to be fucked one way or another. If I weren't married to an army man and living on post, I'd probably still be living with my parents (or I'll have just moved back in after getting laid off from Dillard's because of declining retail sales in Florida [and, I know, elsewhere, but Sarasota, where I lived before coming to Alaska, was known for its shopping. Retail/Tourism was the area's major source of income]).
I don't even know what-all's going on in Florida now...
I hope things get better for you. I wish there were some way I could help my friends (on and offline) more/at all, but I'm buried under a mountain of debt myself.
