My Dad finished my violin for my Bday!!! It's red with black and chrome hardware. He custom carved the entire thing from wood blocks. It's set up as a folk/Irish Fiddle. Here's a pic:
That looks really nice. The fiddle (I'm from Kentucky, every violin is a fiddle) is one stringed instrument I have no clue as to how to play. Susan used to play the cello when she was younger. Of course, she also played piano, organ, bassoon, saxophone, guitar, and drums. I just play guitar and bass.
A classical violin with a flat bridge is also called a "fiddle", which is what I have here (he filed the bridge down)! I'm not sure what this one stringed instrument you speak of is? Do you have a pic of it? I've never seen one that I know of.
I think you misunderstood what I'm saying. In Kentucky, we tend to refer to every violin as a fiddle, no matter how it is set up. I understand the flat bridge of the fiddle versus the curved bridge of the violin. But, we tend to call them all the same; a fiddle (unless it is played at some snooty orchestra performance).
If you are playing bluegrass or even country music, it's a fiddle. If you are playing classical, it is a violin. That's the down and dirty rural definition.
Other than a flattop guitar, my only bluegrass/country instruments are a dobro and a 6-string banjo (I cheat - the 6-string is set up like a guitar). I also have a lap steel.
Remember, my dad is a semi-pro bluegrass mandolin player, and 3 of my 4 grandparents are KY/TN.
We saw one of those 6 string banjos on the internet. I mentioned it to Brian, but no, he wants the regular 5 string LOL He can play either so, whatever he wants I guess. He also talks about how it would be cool to have a Dobro. I guess we will just get them one at a time as we get extra cash lying around hahahahah :)
He's more into the folk instruments than I am. I'd like to have a drumset and a bass to screw around with, too. Ahhh we will see I guess. We keep an eye open for garage sales selling musical instruments. We are liable to buy anything that's cheap, even if we can't play it YET ;)
