International Peace Day was this week, and one of my plans for my follow on for the Japan trip involved discussing Japanese Peace Education, Hiroshima and so on. Since we weren't in school on August 6th, it made sense to hold it with the International Peace Day ( Read more... )

I am so so so getting some of the kids at work to do this. That is awesome. And I'll be sending Origami paper for them as well. That is totally awesome.

:) The kids are addicted to making the cranes. And they know they are doing it for a cause, which is something that makes it all the more meaningful and special. How wonderful would it be to be able to send 1000 cranes to Japan for August 6th every year under your school's name? And how amazing is it that the desire TO send it there came from 11 year olds themselves?! And then to also apply it to something that's happened at home in their own lifetime and connect it to something that happened so far away that they had never heard about before. I guess I'm still just in awe of what they've managed to do already, as well as what they want to accomplish. It would awesome if you guys wanted to participate too! I know that a lot of schools participated in Pinwheels for Peace for International Peace Day, but this is another way for students to learn about it as well and would be awesome if it spread.

Hmmmm... the video I used was The Mushroom Club, though it was tough for the 6th graders to follow, and I had to skip through some tough parts. I'd suggest reading the story of Sadako to them. That really makes it sink in how people who weren't affect before still get sick from the after effects of it ( ... )

I have a bunch, a hundred maybe? that I made when I was younger (probably about the age of your kids) that I'd love to send. It'll have to wait until my financial aid comes in, though... Same address or what?

That would be AWESOME! Same address works. And there isn't any big rush on it. I'm hoping to keep them motivated on this throughout the entire school year, or at least till Christmas. ^__^ They think it's cool that adults are into it as well. *huggles*

I'm folding them, I've drafted friends, cousins, and my little brothers, I'm going to draft the anime club at my school next week, and I've drafted some other members of the cosplay coalition!! So you'll be getting quite a few from Texas! ♥

Also, Grave of the Fireflies is a really good movie about Hiroshima. It's the saddest thing that has ever been made. EVER!!!! ;>n<;
