Claire Felicie - Here are the young men. ‘Marked‘
"My series “Here are the young men” (The Netherlands - Afghanistan, 2009-2010) show photos of Dutch marines deployed to Afghanistan. These marines are young boys, full of excitement and expectations who are being sent to a war zone. There they are confronted with pain, sadness and death. Will something appear on their faces of these experiences? To find an answer to this question Claire Felicie photographed the marines of the 13th infantry company of the Royal Netherlands Marine Corps, before, during and after their deployment in Uruzgan.
The series ‘Here are the young men’ is divided in three subseries:
‘Marked‘: black and white triptychs of marines before, during and after their tour of duty to Afghanistan.
‘Armoured‘: black and white diptychs of marines back from patrol and photos of their good luck charms.
‘Committed‘: colour photos of marines on nightly patrols and on their base Combat Outpost Tabar in Uruzgan, Afghanistan."

Lalage Snow - We Are The Not Dead
"A series of portraits of British soldiers over a period of eight months, before, during and after their operational deployment in Afghanistan. The portraits are captioned with the thoughts and feelings of each individual. They speak of fear, being injured, losing a brother soldier, missing home, excitement, coming home, and what life is like on the frontline
As the body count of British servicemen killed or wounded rose and the political ramifications of the British army’s presence in Afghanistan became increasingly convoluted, more and more soldiers felt like they didn’t have a voice, or at least, weren’t being listened to. ‘We Are The Not Dead’ is an attempt at giving the brave young men and women the chance to speak."

"«РР» представляет фотопроект Юрия Чичкова «Армия», творческое исследование того, как меняется молодой человек за время службы в Вооруженных силах. Проект не только об армии, но и о психологии. Все происходящее с юношей - испытания и трудности, взросление, формирование характера, появление новых друзей - неизбежно отражается в его лице, во взгляде. Зритель может попробовать домыслить историю, в каждом случае сравнивая два портрета: слева - фотографии, сделанные еще до военной присяги, справа - примерно через год, за несколько дней до увольнения. Автор выбрал предельно простую стилистику фото, чтобы человеческая, психологическая сторона была как можно чище, яснее, чтобы не смазать стилем и авторским взглядом собственно исследование, дать зрителю возможность максимально объективно увидеть изменения, происходящие с героями"
