I have to say I found this rather disturbing. I mean, and I don't think I'm alone on this, it's probably time to bring back Where in the World is Carman San Diego. Not only did that take map skills, you had to place little flashy lights on a map while running around on top of it with a timer counting down and all kinds of crowd pressure. I ( Read more... )

Thanks a lot Kyle. A part of me just died right now.

I was in the State Geography Bee in 7th grade. Damn Martinique being a French protectorate...

Anyway, New York? NEW F***INg YORK? Who were they asking? The ladies swiping makeup from the l'oreal counter at Saks? The guy with the sawed off shotgun who concluded his poll by saying to the pollster "ain't you got a pertty mouth"? Jessica Simpson?

Clearly CNN needs to re-evaluate their news graphics to feature much larger, brighter, and possibly tastier maps of Iraq when covering the war. What if the map not only showed where the latest roadside bombing was, but also the locations of all the nearest Starbucks and fun factoids about TomKat? Maybe if the map was handed out as a prize on Oprah instead of a PT Cruisers. Maybe if the long awaited "The Passion of the Map of Iraq" was released this summer. I can only hope...

i think part of the problem is that those (note, only 540 or something like that) participants don't exactly watch CNN... poo on them.

Yeah, seriously, who watches CNN. To paraphrase Simon and Garfunkle, I can gather all the news I need from the Daily Show.

To be honest, aside from a the general area, I couldn't tell you exactly which of a collection of seemingly arbitrary shapes are those places. Of course, I always blew ass at any sort of geography quiz, but they were pretty few and far between in my youth.

Still I imagine a lot of kids feel more or less how I do - if I need to know where Iraq or New York or Ohio is, I can look it up on Google Maps. It's just like phone numbers - lots of people don't remeber phone numbers any more becuase they just put them in their phone. Hell, I don't even know Marina's phone number. I'd like to say that this is because our brains realize that with these technological advances, we no longer have to depend so much on remebering certian things and can devote that space and processing power to other, more advanced pursuits, but I'm pretty sure it's just because we're lazy.

That being said, I am all for the return of Carmen San Diego.

I have to agree with Ben. Aside from the west coast and the obvious one, states are kind of a guessing game. I could tell you that new york is one the East coast in the middle somewhere with an island that is long.

But if you think that's bad, I know a girl who didn't find out til college that England was an island.
