Having only seen the HP movies, I don't know a lot about these characters, but I get the idea of them quite easily thanks to the tone and rhythm you set here. Tonks sounds fascinating, and actually so does Moody. I love the way they both sound so good at what they do, but how you can also see how what they've had to go through and put themselves through to get to that level has turned both of them into the walking wounded.
I particular liked the timing of this set of lines:
"Thing is this," Kingsley Shacklebolt had told her back then, noticing her looks. "Who would you say is the most paranoid person you've ever heard of?"
"Alastor Moody," she'd said, her voice a question, because, there was no point to that one.
Kingsley had given her a sage nod. "And who's the most successful Auror to survive the war?"I really like the way you leave that conversation unfinished. So economical, because really, nothing more needs to be said. Sign of an accomplished writer ( ... )

Tonks and Moody can be pretty intriguing if they appear together in a fic. Because in canon, the two of them usually are comic relief (well, Tonks not so much anymore later... and then they both die...).
I also totally stole the lines you quoted from one of my own old fics, which had been a story about Kingsley. But hey, why not use it twice if it works. ;)

Heh, I've occasionally done that trick. Sometimes a line is just too good to only use once. :D
