No damage whatsoever, the block heater is an attachment that fits into the block through an aperture and is held in place with a couple of screws. On the onside of the attachment is a small heating coil which is what keeps the oil in a liquid state. Imagine starting an engine in a vat of Jello, that's what the motor components have to deal with in starting with an unheated oil pan.
