So I have two questions

I've been wondering about two things for a while now and I'd like to hear the opinion of my fellow fans

1. What were the games for, actually? I mean, in the first TRON it was implied that people playing video-games were controlling the lightcycles, but then that was dropped, especially once they put Flynn in. Then we had TRON Legacy, where the games seemed to serve just for CLU's voyeuristic pleasure - as well as a crowd of programs who seemd to be there for the whole "Bread and circuses" thing (without the bread LOL). I mean, the games didn't seem to have any other function beyond entertainment in the movie. The comic, on the other hand, led me to believe that CLU used the games to derezz programs because the system was overloading because of the ISOs and he was freeing up space.

2. Are the programs, such as Tron and Ram and Yori etc. AIs? They were obviously self-aware, which made them persons, but at the same time they had to follow their user-given imperative. With Rinzler the things become quite iffy, being brainwashed and all that. CLU was created in Flynn's image, so this led me to believe he was a true AI. Gem, Castor, etc. also seemed to behave independantly and possessed self-awareness. The guards, on the other hand seemed more like automatons than persons, especially the one Flynn reprogrammed and then bopped on the head.

Any thoughts on these matters?
