Birth

As far as births go, her’s was quite underwhelming.

She just… appeared, out of nowhere. Purely because the Grace decided she must exist. The Universe was out of sync, out of balance ever so slightly. She could feel down to her very marrow (which had only existed as of a few seconds ago) that the six segments of the key to time were decaying, destroying all that was around them. The Universe was dying.

She shivered. It was surprisingly cold and a fat droplet of water splashed unpleasantly on her nose, which was tingling ever so slightly. She stared at the sky and willed the rain to stop and it complied more or less immediately. Taking in a deep breath of air, she found it ever so slightly disappointing. It was dusty and smelled of damp, like old houses which have had water slipping through the masonry for decades did, or so she imagined, at the very least. But the activity of breathing itself was quite enjoyable. The sensation of air streaming down her trachea was new and pleasant, despite the muskiness of it all.

All she could see on this planet less than an hour away from the end of the Universe was a dank grey-ness. It put her off moving just now. All she could hear, faintly, was someone, no, not just someone, the Doctor, calling for someone called Peri. She shivered. The Grace had warned her that he’d be trouble, but he did this kind of thing for a living, so she stood, knowing he would find her within a matter of minutes.

Her sister had already disappeared. She wasn’t exactly related, but it was a close enough relation for humans to understand. They balanced each other. Like the Guardians, one black, one white at each end of time. Two constructs to echo the relationship of the two guardians. Both started the same, both would change over time.

A segment was close by. The Doctor was carrying it. She could just about see him through the rain that was not falling. He approached her, with a genial smile and hair plastered to his face.

“Hello?”

”Hello.”
