Ryan was packing up the ice box when Bam walked into the room proper clad in only a pair of jeans and socks. “I just called the truck stop to check on the trailer…“ Dunn explained. “Their boss wants us to move it today or they’re gonna tow it…”

“I thought you paid to park it?” Bam questioned.

“I did… but truck stops can be fucked like that… depending on what manager is on. We better get over there soon… they won’t hesitate calling some heavy equipment tow truck…”

Quickly shoving his new clothes into his toiletry bag, Bam left a single shirt out and grabbed their coats. “Meet you by the truck then?” He handed Ryan his jacket.

Leaning in, Dunn kissed him quickly on the lips before nodding. “Yeah, I’ll just be a few minutes.” He ran his thumb over Bam’s chin before pulling on his coat and walking out the door.

“We hide behind the crimson door while the summer is killed by the fall. Alive behind the crimson door while the winter sings… your love will be the death of me…” Bam sang along with the CD that Ryan had playing. It was the one he’d bought at Best Buy the day before that had nearly started an argument. Bam’s eyes never left the scenery passing them by. “Death served wine for lovers… brought from the world where devils reign. And intoxicated angels with sorrow… they witnessed in the eyes of their slaves…”

“Are you gonna be okay?” Dunn blurted out shifting gears as they pulled onto the interstate.

“Look I know I should be all thankful for everything… especially you… but I’m depressed as fuck today… okay… can we just drop it?” Searching for anything to draw the conversation from himself, Bam quickly pointed to a radio contraption on the dash. “What’s that?”

“CB radio…”

“You never use it…”

“Don’t need to that much with you around?”

“Huh?”

“Mostly used it to talk to other drivers and shit… sometimes ask for directions or pass along weather conditions…”

“It’s like a walkie talkie?” Bam grinned despite himself.

“Yeah…”

“Cool!” His eyes sparkling suddenly, Bam practically bounced in his seat. “Well, say something to someone!!!” He urged.

Ryan laughed, but brought the CB to his lips. “Break 10-20 this is the Alter Boy on the far side of K-town heading east bound on I-40 looking for a clean shot back out…” The radio crackled.

“10-4 Cryin’ Ryan! This is The Missing Link … shaking the bushes… clean shot stand on it back out…”

Another voice broke in. “10-4 Alter Boy… greasy side up on the hammer lane yard stick three six niner back out.”

“Yeah buddy…” He clicked off the CB and cut his eyes at Bam, happy to see a bewildered smile spread across the kid’s face.

“What the hell did you guys just say?”

Dunn laughed. “I said we were leaving Knoxville on interstate 40 and I was checking to see if the road was clear of cops…”

Blinking Bam furrowed his brow. “Break 10-20...”

“Break… let me speak… 10-20... Location… this is Alter Boy… me… on far side of k-town… Knoxville… heading east bound on I-40 looking for a clean shot… route clear of police… out.”

“Huh… what’d they say back?”

“The Missing Link drove ahead to draw out cops and gave me the go ahead to step on the fuel…”

“And the other guy?”

“There’s a car rolled on the left lane at mile marker 369...”

Bam paused for a moment taking in the information. “Alter boy?”

Pinching his nose, Ryan chuckled a little. “Yeah.”

“Uh huh… why?”

“A guy I use to drive tandem with gave me the handle after I … passed up… spending time with lot lizards…”

“English maybe?”

“Prostitutes.”

Eyes wide, Bam practically choked on his own spit. “Jesus…” He recovered quickly. “And Cryin’ Ryan?”

“The Missing Link… he and I use to CB a lot when I first started trucking… after I broke up with my last boyfriend…”

“He knows you’re gay?!”

“No…”

“Oh… what do they call… gays on there?”

Dunn shook his head with a smile. “Good buddies…”

Bam snorted in laughter. “That’s fucking awful…”

“Isn’t it?”

“How would you refer to me?”

“I hadn’t thought about that…” Ryan paused. “It sounds more offensive than it really is…”

“What…”

“Ankle biter…”

“Suppose it’s better than pillow biter…”

“I don’t know if there’s a different word for people your age!”

“Hrmph…”

“Could mess with their heads and call you my better half…”

“Har.” The CD finished and the radio began playing. Bam immediately flinched when hip hop started playing. “Your radio is scaring me…” Ryan guffawed in laughter. “Seriously… Fergie?” Bam questioned.

“Shit, you know who it is… what does that say about you … let alone me?”

“Fucktard.”

Later that evening, Bam having taken a nap for a good three hours of the drive, was bouncing around once again singing along with the radio as they pulled into a Pilot truck stop. “I was waiting for you… waiting for all my life… and I’ve crying for you, dying for you all this time…”

The smile that was plastered on Dunn’s face slowly crumbled as they pulled up along side a dark blue Peterbilt.

Bam leaned forward trying to look out Ryan’s window. “What?” His eyes fell on the side of the truck. It read: The Missing Link. “Oh…” He tried shrugging as if he didn’t care. “I’m you sister’s ankle biter… right?”

Glaring a little, Ryan shook his head. “If he asks… fuck him… we are what we are. I can’t very well preach to you about being yourself when I won’t even fucking be myself…”

“Won’t they hassle you?”

“That is why god invented the tire iron…”

Wordlessly, Bam slid out of the cab and followed Dunn into the truck stop to pay for overnight parking. He was playing with his bottle of water as they waited in line at the counter; letting the liquid slosh to one end then the other before repeating the process. Ryan was smirking at him, but he kept on. He hated standing in line. He missed his skateboard. Sighing he tipped his bottle again.

“Well, if it ain’t Cryin’ Ryan!!!” Boomed a voice from behind them.

Bam immediately tensed up. He looked around with his eyes wide. The man walking quickly towards them with his arms outstretched gave him an entirely new perspective on the concept of a haggard biker. He knew then that Ryan was pretty damn clean cut in comparison to some of his counterparts.

Dunn patted Bam on the shoulder and stepped out of line to quickly hug the other trucker. “What the hell are you doing on this side of the country? I thought you were going to be running that dedicated shit over there in Nebraska…”

“Aw, hell… they cut back to three drivers… kicked my worn ass to the curb…” The man’s eyes fell to Bam. “Who’s your friend?”

The moment of truth. Ryan rolled his neck until it popped then with a smile replied. “This is my buddy, Bam… showing him the ropes… rules of the trade…”

That gave the man pause. “Bit young?”

Seeing his chance to jump in, Bam spoke. “Graduated a couple years ago… not really the college type… thought I’d check out what Ry does for a living…” He held out his hand.

The driver looked him up and down then grabbed his hand and shook it. “Name’s Spence, but everybody calls me The Missing Link…”

Behind him, Ryan grinned at Bam.

“Nice to meet you, Spence…”

“You too…” He glanced over at Ryan. “You refer to him by his handle?”

Chuckling, Dunn shook his head. “Nah… his name’s really Bam.” Ryan slipped Bam a twenty when the line moved forward with him in it. He nodded at him with a sly smile and turned his attention back to Spence as they walked outside.

“Buddy?”

Ryan itched at his beard then nodded. “Yeah…”

“Alter boy, my ass…” He elbowed Dunn’s shoulder, but there was an accepting smile on his face. Spence looked him square in the eyes. “You don’t tell many people that, do you?”

“You’re one of the first…”

“Well, alright…”
