Catfish suck, IMO. I think you're supposed to have dedicated catfish aquariums and mix them up, but not with other species. I got a ghost catfish and he was dull dull dull, never left the bottom of the cage and rarely moved. I was supposed to have a pair, but read they still don't do much.
Plus that one grows big - and limits the amount of other fish you can have.
I have never really been a fish person but I can tell you about my mom's tank. They have an upside down cat and it has done just fine. It has grown but fish only grow as big as the tank allows them... Sucker fish in general seem to be a good idea. They mean that you don't have to clean the tank as often. Dad loves them for that. They aren't the most fabulous things to watch but if it makes for less work. Oh and they only had one for like three years and it did just fine. Barbs do seem to eat every other fish out there ( we call it eating it's really just that they beat the crap out of the others) The basic thing they have learned is that you can't put any fish rated docile with any fish that isn't... they won't last long. Oh and don't buy Wal-mart fish.
Tiger barbs are vicious. Cherry barbs aren't. I spoke to someone who ACTUALLY knew what they were talking about last night, and she recommended, with a 10 gallon, that if I wanted ONLY tiger barbs, go with them, otherwise, try the cherry barbs, because they are docile, as long as you have 6, plus their smaller, so I can get some other fish.
She said I could have 5 barbs, two catfish, and a dwarf frog =)
