Phone Call to the Sister

Who: troellwr and Rhiannon Davies
Where: Over the phone
When: A week after Ianto breaks his leg
Rating: PG

A week ago, Ianto had gone for run, just like he did everyday. The only difference had been kissing Jack good-bye, so he could do inventory. That was still new, unfortunately the day had taken a down turn rather quickly. While running, he'd gotten hit by a messenger bike, broke his tibia and fibula. This week, he's stuck on his butt while Jack is doing inventory and working. He's watching TV when the character decides to call his sister and something clicks. He never called his sister. He bites his lip and reaches for his mobile, sitting next to him. He flips through the address book and calls her, mentally preparing himself for berating he's about to receive.

"Turn that down, I'm on the phone!" comes across the line before an actual answer, along with the blaring of a telly that seems to be turned to cartoons or some sort of family film. Then there's a brief rustling, like someone's hand uncovering from the receiver, and Rhiannon clears her throat. "Hello?"

"Rhi?" Ianto says softly. "It's Ianto."

"Ianto!" she exclaims. "It's about time you called." Rhi pauses; Ianto might be able to hear her eyes narrowing. "What's going on? Are you all right?"

"Nothing is going on," Ianto protests, though there is something totally going on. "I'm just relaxing, thought I'd call you."

Rhiannon sounds less than convinced; can he blame her? "Well, you should come 'round soon ... it's almost Mica's birthday."

No, he really can't. "Thanks for the reminder, I'll make sure I get something out in the post." Or talk Jack or Jackson into doing it. One of those two would do it for him, he's sure of it.

The frown is clear in her voice. "Ianto Jones, you already missed her last birthday, which I understand with all you had going on, but what's there to stop you from making it to this one?"

"No car," Ianto says slowly. "Makes it kind of difficult to go visit." Not to mention the broken leg.

Cheeky git. "I could come pick you up," she offers. "Or we can come to you. I'm sure Mica would love to visit Uncle Ianto, and we've not really seen where you're living now ..."

"I'll think about it," Ianto promises. "I'm not really feeling up to visiting right now or having visitors."

Definitely a frown in her voice now. "Ianto, is something the matter?"

"No, nothing is the matter. I'll be fine." At least that is a bit more honest than saying he is fine.

Sorry, Ianto, she knows that trick. "All right, out with it. What's wrong?"

"I..." Ianto hesitates, because really getting run over by a messenger bike is embarrassing. "Had a bit of an accident."

"What sort of accident?" There goes the sisterly concern, and a creak of her obviously sitting up straighter in her chair. "Are you all right?"

"I broke my leg and I'll be fine, I've got a cast midway up thigh, and some very nice painkillers."

"Ianto!" Definitely a reprimand. "I'm of a mind to come and break your thick head. Why didn't you call and tell me?"

Ianto is wincing at that. "I am calling you and telling you!"

"And how long ago did this happen?" She's guessing he's not sitting up in hospital right now.

"Last week," Ianto says, quickly pulling the phone away waiting for the angry yelling to stop.

Of course, Rhiannon has more than a few choice words, though she does watch her language for the most part for the sake of the kids. The last thing she shouts into the receiver is, "Put the phone back to your ear now!"

"Are you going to yell some more?" Ianto asks, giving the phone a scared look. He's positively cowering on his couch.

"No." To the contrary, her voice sounds positively sweet. "I'm coming over. You need someone to help out around there."

Ianto does put it back, "No, you don't need to come over. I'm fine, my boss has been helping out and Jackson is going to be over on Friday."

There's a bit of piqued interest. "Who's Jackson, then?"

"A friend," Ianto rolls his eyes.

"Awfully good of your boss, though, helping out." Last time she checked, that wasn't the sort of thing bosses did.

"Yes, well Jack is also my friend."

Oh, Ianto. Poor choice of words. "Jack, is it?" she questions. "Sounds cozy for an employer-employee relationship."

"I told you, he's my friend, my best friend really." Ianto is at least honest about that.

Rhiannon makes a small doubting noise, but she relents. "All right. Are you sure you don't need me to come over?"

"I'm sure," Ianto says softly. "Everything is under control here, I promise."

"Well ... call me if you need anything. And I'm going to come visit soon. You're not getting out of it."

"If I need anything I'm going to call whoever is closest and that isn't you." Ianto reminds her. "Besides you can't just drop everything and run, you've got the kids to take care of."

"Johnny can watch the kids while I come visit you ... I've only got one brother, after all, and he seems to be determined to do whatever he can not to see his old sister." Sniffle, guilt trip - do you feel guilty yet, Ianto?

Ianto sighs, "I, I didn't break my leg to get out of seeing you!" Yes, he is feeling just a smidge guilty.

"And how often do you come to see me when your leg isn't broken?" Rhiannon asks pointedly.

"I work six days a week," Well he works the evenings of six days a week, but he sleeps during most of the day.

"You're not working now, I should think," she states bluntly. "Which gives you plenty of free time for a visit from your sister."

"No, I don't even want to attempt steps with this monster on my leg." Ianto says, considering it. "So yeah."

Excellent, she has him trapped in one location. "Pick a night, I'll bring some things over and cook dinner, and we can catch up properly."

"Saturday?" Ianto suggests, scratching his head. Jack's normally busy on Saturday's with the club.

It's a little suspicious how easily he's giving in ... but then again, this hasn't really been easy, has it? "Saturday's perfect. What time?"

Ianto scratches his head, "I don't know, eight?"

"Eight it is, then." Rhiannon can almost see him scratching his head, and it amuses her. "No weaseling out, promise!"

"Yeah, yeah," Ianto says, rolling his eyes.

"See you Saturday," Rhiannon promises. "Love you!"

"Later, sis," Ianto says with a slight smile.
